<div class="IPBDescription">Please submit!</div> Basically - I'm part of a staff circle that's developing a new, smaller convention aimed about half at anime fans and half at gamers - though a lot of them overlap fandoms. ^^ This year, we're having a survival horror / dark fantasy theme.
Anyway - as one of our events, we're having Jeopardy! and I need you guys to post Q&A that you think would be good (From the following series - Biohazard/Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Castlevania, Devil May Cry).
Please note what series it's from, as well as how difficult you'd rate the question;

Q: What do the Doorman monsters symbolize in Silent Hill 2?
A: <span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:black'> Short answer: Parental sexual abuse and fear. Long answer: The door symbolizes a sort of a personal gateway to hell. It is a normal bedroom door, behind which lurks a monster that cannot be seen because it is shrouded in black. The symbol is that of fear in an abused child's mind that when they are alone in their room at night, the door will open and the abuser will enter the room to seek pleasure from the child. This is also why the door opens when the monster attacks. You can see another similar symbol of this abuse in the scene where James talks to Angela for the last time. The object on the wall is a canvas, behind which hangs a body. There is a clear, dirty blood stain in the canvas between the legs of the body. She seems to know all the things James does and also keeps voicing his worst thoughts constantly, like the line "You didn't love her anyway". Laura was once a real person, true enough, but this Laura isn't exactly the same one. Also, Laura does not see monsters, which separates her from the rest of the characters. She has no shame, no guilt and is innocent, something that would make her a very odd visitor to Silent Hill, because she has done no harm to anyone, nor is she connected to the place's past in any meaningful way.
Laura is also the polar opposite of Maria, constantly tormenting James in every little way she can come up with, even though she hasn't met him before. Notice also that she seems to be aware of the way Mary really died even before James admits it to himself. Why else would she tease James, even going so far as practically trying to kill him by locking him in the basement room of the hospital. This scene is also odd, since Laura isn't supposed to see monsters. If she is not aware of them, why would she choose that particular room as the one to lock James in?
Also, she tells James in the hotel that she received a birthday card from her for her eighth birthday a week ago. Mary died two years ago. (No, I'm not considering the weak "the two years you thought were real are lies and you killed her last week" plot option. That would be predictable, anti-climatic and totally against the other plot elements.)
James is an exceptional main character in videogames, since rarely do gamers get the chance to play a guy who is actually quite selfish, and in harsh light also a total bastard. Of course we have other 'bad' main protagonists in the history of games, but usually their view of the world is evident right from the start, like in the GTA series where you are supposed to act like a criminal. In SH2, the difference is that even people who have played the game through might feel that James' deeds were somehow justified. It's just not very easy to accept that the guy who's been your ticket to the ride isn't someone you'd want to be in real life.
In conclusion, Laura and Maria are split sides of Mary. Laura is the innocence and the light for James to see his bad actions in. Maria is what James deep down would have wanted of Mary: a nymph. Maria's constant brutalization in the hands of Pyramid Head is just the expression of guilt by James of having such thoughts about his wife. Laura's actions are the opposite, hampering James' progress because she is the side of Mary that James knows would never approve of his selfish and sexist manners.
Also, James, Angela and Eddie are in Silent Hill because they are murderers. Maria and Laura are not, so what are they doing there?</span>

Then the same thing happens on Heather's end, accompanied by slow, chilling music. It fills the room completely, and Heather begins taking damage until you get the hell out of there. It was the scariest thing I've ever seen in a videogame. Ever.</span>

Of course it can be argued either way, but I prefer to believe she's alive. As an innocent, Samael has no control over her; protected by Metatron she doesn't see the monsters or any horrible, warped sights.
She is connected to Mary, as a former patient at the same hospital, and that's why she's there, searching. She exists in an entirely different dimension really. It can be argued that she lives in the proper Silent Hill, uncorrupted and sane.
Once she knows the truth about Mary, she's ready to go. Now, if you get the good "Leave" ending, James has cleared his concious, and is as such free from Samael's influence. Silent Hill no longer tricks him with illusions, but Laura remains. She is tangible, and he presumably adopts her as they leave together.
Oh and Sniper Chance, that room scared the life out of me too. Only "The Cradle" level of Thief 3 has scared me more <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I guess I should probably play more survival horror games (just REs, SHs and DC...I think). I'm trying to think of a decent question for Dino Crisis - but it's just not happeing at the moment. Man, I wish I owned that game (at least there's the demo with RE3...that I haven't played in years). I should probably try to finish off the 12 bonus character epiologues, but who wants to beat the game 12 times? Anyone see Dino Crisis for the DC around, that'd be nice.

There's just one thing that sort of bothers me. If she were real, why is she present in the "dark" side of Silent Hill, and able to manipulate objects there? The hospital I could understand, maybe she just doesn't quite see it the way James does, but what about the hotel? The hotel is different from other locations, because the "dark" side, or illusionary side of the hotel is actually the one that looks clean and proper, and reality is the burnt down husk of a building, it is patently odd that Laura is present in James' hallucination so strongly that she is able to play a piano that went up in flames with the building itself.
This is also the reason why I consider Silent Hill 2 the best and most mature part of the series. The plot contains no traces of standard Hollywood occult or funny gods stuff. Instead it's a multi-leveled psychological horror story, and a very enjoyable one indeed. I was sort of let down by Silent Hill 3, because even though it had its moments ,like seeing the wheelchair in that one room you cannot reach - for some reason it just sent chills down my back, or the mannequin storage room, the whole story just didn't compare with SH2 on any level.

There's 3 dimensions to Silent Hill. Normal, Fog and Dark. We <b>never</b> get to see Normal Silent Hill, which if Laura is alive is where she presides. In Normal Silent HIll we don't know the state of the hotel; it could be thriving, abandoned or even burnt down but somehow with the piano still functional. Laura can only communicate and manipulate the other dimensions because of her connection to Mary and James and her desire to learn the truth.
Of course, and this is what I adore about the Silent Hill series, this is all very subjective. Those lovable Konam rogues never give a definite answer for many of Silent Hill's mysteries, leaving it open for the player to form his or her own views.

If you're feeling a bit grandiose you could give people an "audio round" by playing some wavs, eg the Hunter scream, or the Headcrab scream or a pinky demon from Doom.

as my boss had specified the con as being survival horror oriented until I'd already begun working on the trivia list - she then added that she had decided to broaden the con's theme to include C/DMC and to work that into the trivia as well.
... actually, if I could work in Typing of the Dead somewhere, that would make me REALLY HAPPY, but I don't think my boss would appreciate that.
Don't know about you, never had any problems with RE's control scheme. Made it a lot easier to target things for me, actually. As for the SH question - wasn't that something they brought up with the XB/PS2 versions of SH2?
