Sound Crackling

When I play ns on any server on any map, the sounds on the map make high-pitched 'crackling' noises. They sound no matter how high pitched the sound is, and the more high pitched the regular sound is, the more severe the crackling. Its very noticeable, it doesn't really affect gameplay, but its annoying and it gives me a headache if I listen to it for too long.
This does not occur in any other mod, or application. Nor is it volume, as i've tried heightening and lowering the volume, and the crackling noises are still there.
I assure you my sound card drivers are up to date, and I'm using a Plantronics Audio90 as headphones.
