They did finish the 3rd season, I believe you can still buy it on DVD. The real cliffhanger comes in the 4th season, which they never finished.
Wow, animaniacs. Now THAT cartoon really beat out censorship at times. I remember this one episode, where it showed wakko, yakko, and dot (i think thats the names) talking in the background. It's their sillhouettes behind the rolling credits, and theyre talking about incredibly ronchy stuff, that most kids around that age wouldnt know at all. I saw it as I was a little older and laughed incredibly hard at what I was missing out. Great cartoon.

I remember Animaniacs, that pwned so much.
*edit* OOH! AND BATTLETECH! *edit*
But I know what happened. In all seriousness I can pinpoint the single thing which started the decline of children's cartoons.
Japan.
Some thought Pokemon was just a fad, but soon came dragonball Z, Yu-gi-oh, and great tidal waves of excrement in the same mould and with equally inane content. Even I was sucked in at first, I played the game. I almost caught em all. I had a level 99 Blastoise. But I never really liked the TV show itself and one day I just said to myself "You know what? This is crap."
Damn you Japan, all our children's minds are belong to you....
(yes I live in constant fear of the Japanese coming to my house with their tentacles... hi venmoch)
