What Are The Best Mmo Games Out There Today?

what do YOU play?
I'm just curious what the most popular MMO games are today... I've been kinda out of the loop since I haven't stumbled across any I wanted to spend $15 or so a month on yet...

I was into Ragnarok Online for a few months, but got fed up with the shoddy level of support provided to the US version compared to the Korean version...

I wanted to shell out for planetside, but I couldn't believe they wanted to make me buy it in a box (for like $40) to start playing even though I already had it installed from the trial -- I wanted to just start paying my $15/mo...

I'm downloading the SWG 14 day trial right now, is it worth my time?

WoW is near release right? anyone testing it?

city of heroes any good? etc, just fill me in on any good ones -- especially ones in free open beta or easy-to-get-into closed beta

also, I've never played everquest and I don't hear it talked about much by real gamers (such as yourselves), and yet by number of subscribers it's by far the most popular one isn't it? what's so special/terrible about it?

-era of faith is in alpha but itsnt looking too good in the right direction
-priston tale was free but now its not, well its free untill your level 40+ and its down a LOT
-GunBound really shuldent be called a mmorpg =/
-risk your life is ok but has a few crashing problems and you level extremly fast so I cant see it lasting long
-ever quest is a bit old to me, way to many expansions....
-neocron is fun but you get lost easly and the other fractions own you
-final fanisty 11 looks good but can get boring leveling some times (its the one I pay for right now)

Thats my summary of the ones I have played and rember....
But theres a lot more mmo games go to www.mmorpg.com for a nice list

(I know many spelling mistakes dont have word installed yet =/)

Guild Wars. Although technically its not a MMORPG, because you only pay for it the one time you buy it.(!)
And you are never FORCED to battle other players. You must enter PvP arenas to do so, in fact. Unless the design is changed before the game is released, that is.

They're putting MECHS in for August. The PS forums are going nuts right now, and i'm talking 2.0 release nuts. It is impossible to make a thread there without the word "mech" occuring at some point.

Not that the game isn't still awesome without teh mechz0rs.

nil: mechs as in, MAX armor but bigger? with multiple pilots or something? anyway sounds pretty awesome, I'm already tempted to subscribe... I just can't believe they make you actually go to the store and buy the game in a box for $40 even if you already have the full game installed from the trial and just want to start paying your $15 monthly fee immediately...

Align: you're kinda selling me on guild wars -- no monthly fee plus no getting PK'd unless you explicitly want to? *goes to investigate further* :>

Neverwinter Nights, not massive in terms of players but massive in the fact thier are hundreds of servers and hundreds of diffrent modules to try, plus you anit got to pay per month

You can just subscribe off their website.. you dont need to buy the PS box.

edit: I hate it that they merged the servers. I cant play it here in singapore because of that, i keep getting disconnected... /me cries.

are you sure? because I think when my trial ran out like in march, I tried every way I could to figure out how to use my credit card to buy my first month, and there didn't seem to be a way to do it... so I wrote customer service and they told me to buy the game in the store :-/ maybe I just got a bad service guy...

I for one like SWG. No getting PKed unless you want to be PKed, a HUGE HUGE HUGE amount of content both player created and not, large areas, beatiful graphics, and lots and lots of fun. But then there's people who hate it because it isn't Jesus in MMORPG form. Try the trial; contact me as Hisad Kaowerve on Corbantis if you want.

I'm also trying SWG for 14 days. Some fun, but not all impressed. From what I've seen, most people solo. Traveling is a pain in the **** without a vehicle.

I still like Guild Wars better.

    EVE-Online: The Second Genesis

Looks sweet as hell, has a decent economy, wide variety of things to do. You can find free 14-day trials around for it too.

Whoa whoa whoa, back that **** up. Where the hell did you see they were implementing Mechs at for PS?

Neocron is one of my favorites, has a HUGE amount of atmosphere. (except when beer bottles come raining out of the sky)

    SWG: boring.. great otherwise.

Edit: EVE Online is one of the BEST MMORPGs I have EVER played.

We need a MMORPG like dotHACK

Was addicted to EverQuest for 6 months. It gets repetitive but it's so fun when you're playing it.

When you quit you freakin hate it though. You start to play again then realize it sucks... meh.

    ^ ^ ^ not bad for a drunk post.

I'll stick to guildwars, not the run of the mill mmorpg, if it is one at all, but I enjoyed the beta alot. That and the whole not paying montly thing turns me on.

Not get into, no. During the E3 2004 week you could however download a client and play it - I believe 300 000 people did so.
I was one of them. It was Really Neat. Im worried that warriors won't have much to do except clicking... as a monk you were constantly busy managing your mana and making sure your party stayed alive, or at least making sure you stayed alive so you could ressurect them when it was all clear.
Warriors would just click on an enemy, use an ability or two, and then start attacking, hoping that the supporting characters would be able to support enough.

Still, can't win without meat shields protecting the support!

I really wouldn't advise EVE: Online. You shoot rocks or ships, both tasks requiring two clicks to acomplish, or you trade, which involves setting the autopilot to "safest route" and going and cooking some pai.

I've never played an MMORPG but that's simply because I dont believe in shelling out 15 bucks a month for one game... The concept sounds fun though and WoW really caught my attention, but I don't think it will be released for at least another couple of months seeing the european beta signups were just two weeks ago.

Well, planetside currently DOESNT have a free trial, because Sony are nubs, but they DO have a 30-day trial for $9.99, so you're basically getting the game for free, and paying for a month, which is a pretty damn good deal.

And yes, you can buy and download directly from their site.

And cshank, while Battleframes have not yet been "officially" announced, a PC Gamer article about said Battleframes came out somewhat ahead of schedual (oopsy), and the only response that has been given thusfar is that the article IS accurate, and that Battleframes ARE an upcoming feature.

VS Alphellion- looks somewhat like an anime mech in that it is humaniod

TR Collosus- The picture is poor quality, but it looks to be "squatting" much like Metal Gear Rex. And has great big guns

NC Something- Again, the picture is poor quality, but the article refers to it as a chicken-walker, so think Star Wars ATST

    MECH!

It's funny... you only need to pay the $40 for the key. My friend played through beta and when it came out he had to buy it. He never ripped the plastic off the CD case, just used the number!

But on we later learned that there are 2 CD keys with each purchase (one for a friend)... so if you know someone who has it you could bug them for a key.

Well, you can now just pay $9.99 for the key and get your first month free as I said, which is a pretty good deal. Trust me, you don't need a manual. The tutorial is pretty good, albeit fairly boring.

bumping this to share a story I'm reading about EVE online at SA.com, funny stuff =P I'm only about halfway through it but it's gripping even though I haven't even tried the game yet... :>
