The driver has more than just that, including an updating of OpenGL and DirectX handling.

Hopefully this will improve the performance on my cheap budget Geforce 4 MX440. Can't get a new video card for a while....

Usually it's best to completely remove the old drivers, reboot, and then install the new drivers. Video drivers have been known from time to time to have nasty conflicts with each other or not be completely purged from a system after an update.
'Course, that's an awful lot of work. I just install over my old ones <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
