Awesome movie
If I remember right it opened to mixed reviews, and a mixed box office. This is by far one of the best westerns I've seen, and IMO probably Kevin Costner's best movie. Go watch. First half hour or so is slow but it picks up.

I advise anyone not to watch it.
You will fall asleep.
Sounds like Kida doesn't appreciate the old, masterful style of film-making. Sorry, but not everything can be Bay/Bruckheimer vehicles of gratuitous visual hedonism.
I'm there.
It's not an opinion I base on what many critics say, or what the stereotype of old western films are, rather a quincidence.
Instead of watching American Pie, me and a group of friends resorted to watching this film. Now before you bring out the ol' box of pre-judgements, just to let you know, I have lived in Albertan country for six years of my life. This film does great justice in living up to the beautiful landscapes through the many background panoramas. Also, I do appreciate old films made in this style, and others different like Kurosawa; but the important thing is that this film is the typical cliche romance where a cowgirl falls for a cowboy; uhuh, not good. And please, don't go raving about how great the gunfights were...They were extremely terrible; no way someone can miss a person twenty feet away with a Winchester 1873 like rifle, not alone many. I mean, where do they get all the bullets??? .lol.
Overall, I didn't appreciate this film wasting around two hours of my time for an anti-climatic gunfight that sucked balls, and a cliche ending that was extremely predictable; not to mention the mediocre humor, and apathetic atmosphere.
I'd rather watch Dances with the wolves. At least that was a good film, meaning it had the qualities of a good story, and etc.
My opinion.
Quite. Of course the story is telegraphed, that's not what makes this film good. It's the likable characters and their relationships, the beauty of the surroundings and as I said, the most realistic gunfight ever. Of course a person can miss with a rifle, the ground is unstable, adrenaline is pumping and a lot of cover is provided by barrels, horses and wooden structures. As for the ammo, I think it's handled well. They don't have Arnie-esque, limitless reserves, instead Costner and Duvall are forced to retreat to their own pre-planned stockpile. It's all explained.
I knew while watching the film people would either love it or hate it, there's no middle ground. Granted, it's no Once Upon A Time In The West or any other Leone film, but I still enjoyed it greatly.
The cinematography was beautiful
Its called crappy aim. Do this experiment, have a skulk walk up to you in NS, stand the equivilance of 20 feet away from you, pull out your pistol, and aim just to the left of the skulk. You will find that if the gun is not properly aimed at the target, the probablilty of a miss is overwhelmingly large.
