<div class="IPBDescription">Help!!!</div> I'm having a problem in beta4, the screen will freeze up usually once every 5-30 minutes, sometimes only for short durations (5 secs) so it seems like a spike, but other times it can last half a minute or more and I get a "Warning: Connection Problem" and I time out. This happens on all servers I visit and frequently too, although it seems totally random, once it happened withing 5 seconds of entering a server three times consecutively before I gave up, but sometimes I can play an entire game or two without it happening. I have net_graph on but when it happens there are no wild fluctuations of ping (It seems to freeze) and data in and out seem as steady as usual, fps steady too.

I'm on a Cable 586K Connection and the Internet Settings tab in Steam is set to Dsl > 256K, but I've tried Experimenting with other settings with the same results. I've also tried alternating between OpenGL and D3D with different resolutions and 16bit/32bit colours, no change.

This in a completely new Computer and I didnt have this problem on my old one, also my video card, sound card and Motherboard all have latest drivers. I'm running on an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ with 512 MB of RAM and Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 video card.

Any help appreciable.

My experience when I get "Warning: Connection Problem" it is my connection, not Steam. If you are getting this frequently contact your ISP. It also doesn't mean that you "lost" your connection, it can be simply slow line speed.

It also wouldn't hurt to run Spybot S&D and Adware 6.0, defrag, and close any un-needed processes. Don't run anything like MSN or AIM, anything that would use bandwidth.

You can also unplug (not simply turn off) your modem/router, wait a minute and plug back in. This will reset everything and clear it.

Were both systems (old and new comps) running XP? Make sure your XP is setup properly, close (uncheck)QOS Packet Scheduler and in Process close messenger.

Have you gone to dsl and run the tweaks and line speed tests?

Note: There were problems with the latest nvidia drivers that came out last week. I use the 56.72 without a problem.

Well, seeing as how all other games I run online work fine and surfing the web is smoothles I don't think it's and ISP thing, or am I wrong here? Also I run adawere frequently and I always close down all background programs when I play.

I'll try defragging and clearing my modem though, and I'll try the tweak test, good idea, thx.

As for the XP setup thing, I'm not really sure what you're talking about.

Your suggestions seem to have worked, I only get a few small "spikes" sometimes now, lasting 1-2 secs and they are much rarer, thx for the help.
