Ns seems not to install correctly as a custom game

Hi there,
I just downloaded and installed NS and was really looking forward to playing it. But I've got a problem, it seems as if NS is not installed correctly as a "custom game" when the ns_installer finishes.
First of all, I have two instances of "Half-Life" on my harddisc. First is "Half-Life" itself, the second is "Counterstrike", they're installed in /sierra/half-life/ and /sierra/counterstrike/. I'm usually playing TFC, and that's installed in both directories, too, but I usually play TFC from the counterstrike-path.
So I tried to install NS there, too, and choose /sierra/counterstrike/ as the path to my Half-Life-game. Installation finished without a problem, I was able to start up NS from the desktop-icon, but once I tried to start a local game to have a first look at the maps I saw the counterstrike(!)-loading-picture, and the map itself didn't load, even after some minutes.
I tried it more than once, with the same result.
So I thought, perhaps it's a problem with my path. So I uninstalled NS completely, and re-installed it again, this time with the default /sierra/half-life/-path.
Things seemed to be better this time, I saw the NS-loading-picture when starting an empty server.
Next I went into the ingame-browser and wanted to look for an online NS-server. So I went into "Filter" and wanted to choose "game: ns" - but there was no entry "ns", so I just searched for servers without filter - it found >27000 servers.
After I canceled the server-search, shut down NS again, started it up again, I finally had the ability to choose "game: ns" from the "filter"-menu, so I did.
But the problem is, the ingame-browser still wants to download all >27000 server-information, though most of them are CounterStrike! But when I let him download some server-information and cancel the download he correctly filters the servers he downloaded, and only displays the NS-server.
But my main problem is - when I finally try to join one of those found NS-servers, I get the message:
You cannot connect to a server running custom game ns until you install the custom game
It's a rather strange message, because the whole GUI of Half-Life is definitively "Natural Selection", and the installer finished without an error.
So my question is, how do I get Half-Life to accept that the custom game ns indeed IS installed? If I go into "Custom Game"-Menu and hit "Refresh" Half-Life just searches forever for custom games, and if I cancel it, it doesn't show "Natural Selection"
Any suggestions? What did I do wrong?
My system, though I don't think it's my special configuration:
- AMD K6-III 450 Mhz
- 256 MByte RAM
- 32 GByte harddisc (enough space free)
- Geforce2GTS
- Windows 98 SE
Every other mod still runs without problems (have just played TFC a few minutes to test it - but TFC from the /sierra/counterstrike/-path).
Sorry for the long post, hopefully you can help me, perhaps it's just a minor neewbie-problem. Any advise will be appreciated.

I don't understand why, but it helped! Thanks a lot!
Once I start the game from the start-menu I'm able to join a server without getting the error message!

Start halflife before NS then costum and then activet NS now every thing should work. Did for me anyway. Think the shourtcuts got bugs
I either get a message immediately saying I need to install the custom game or it lets me try to connect and then says everything is a LAN game and I'm not allowed in "Class C" or something like that. If I get around one error, I get the other. Anyone find a way around both yet? Anyone else in the same boat?
