<div class="IPBDescription">:(</div> About 3 months ago I bought a Western Digital 40GB Hard Drive. It worked perfectly, no glitches, nothing. Yesterday it suddenly Blue screened my on starup with "Innaccessable Boot Device" listing of suggestions on what to do about my hard drive. I checked all the wiring, undid everything and plugged it back in, cleaned it, etc and no alas, no avail. I switched my old 9 gig in there and everything worked fine. I then switched my 40 back in there and There came the Innaccessable Boot devicee message and blue screen.

This freaking sucks. I have all my models for a hl2 mod that I spent a week each on in there, and no way of backing them up, plus all the models to a red faction 2 pack for NS.

HELP ME PLEASE I HAVE COOKIES AND MILK AND 1 OR 2 MEDALS LYING AROUND.

have you tried making the 40gig a slave to the 9 gig to back up your files? It could be that your installation went corrupt(you didnt mention what OS u had). Try this, if you cant see it then, you have a nice, metal paperweight/coaster/setofmagnets/frisbee

cant do it, im using a dell dimension. Micro ATX or something, the PS only has 1 cord to plug the hd into, and the mobo only has 1 plug for the ribbon.

    Im using Windows 2k Pro

EWWWWW......... mirco ATX............. your processor must be sufficating.....

you *could* spend $3 and buy a ribbon cable with 2 IDE connectors on it to find out, hell, if you lived in SO CAL, i could sent a a dozen or so, but either way, WD is really good about warranty'ing(sp?) thier stuff.

Western Digitals are speedy as a monkey on crack, but they have a higher failure rate than other drives like Seagate or Maxtor. My WD 80 gig pooped out on me a few months ago. I'd go to a computer repair shop and get them to recover some files if you are that desperate. Not cheap though.

I've had more fails from IBM than anything.

Well my 9 gig is an ibm. it was pretty good aside from the fact that some people have more ram than i had space. How much do you think that file recovery would cost? I'm going to go look for my papers for my hd..

Well duh. I meant that among reputable hard drive makers WD sacrifices reliability for speed.

I really hope my IBM Deskstar doesn't knack up. Since I've first had it, at around 12 hours of use it makes a little weird noise, without fail, but it seems to do no harm.

It is quite possible that the drive itself is dead. However there are several possibilites to save yourself.

First thing, go to this website and download the diagnostic utility. Add it to a boot disk (<a href='http://www.bootdisk.com' target='_blank'>www.bootdisk.com</a>) and use it attempt to diagnose your problem.

If you are lucky, it might just be a slight error with your MBR and it might be possible to repair it and attempt a recovery attempt.

But get the utility and tell me the results and then we can decide what to do from that point

    <a href='http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp#diagutils' target='_blank'>http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp#diagutils</a>

^^ go there and get DLG Diagnostic
    Ver. 5.04c

I dont understand how to do what your asking. I take a floppy and install the diagnostic utility and put it on the floppy? Do I get the zip or exe version? Whats with with bootdisk, com link? is there something i should be getting from there?

The Deskstar is nicknamed the "Deathstar" because it has such a huge failure rate, you know.

install the program on a bootdisc, pop it in, restart,

my advice would be goto a friends house, hook up the drive, make sure his boots first, then get your files that way if its not totally corrupted. and also you should back up anything you don't want to lose...

mmm, an entire room full of compaqs with quantum fireball hard drives... never trust a hard drive with "fireball" on the sticker. If you get a lovely pinging sound, kind of like a ping pong ball dropped about 1/2 inch from the ground, you are screwed. completely. "Cannot read from drive C:".

to slave you need a molex y splitter (a few bucks at most at any local computer shop) and a 2 plug ide cable ( you should have one from the 40 gB hdd)

Hah, about 5 months ago mine did the same. Replace the IDE cable and make super sure it is tight to the mobo and drive...that was my problem.
