This is freaky:

<a href='http://www.specialdefects.com/v1/embed/heart_preloader.html' target='_blank'>http://www.specialdefects.com/v1/embed/heart_preloader.html</a>

But at the same time very fascinating.

It's even better when you're dissecting a heart in bio class, and when your partner isn't looking, stick a probe down the aorta and start making the heart beat... just about gave her a heart attack.

I remember this one time about ten years ago, I was dissecting a pluck (Heart, and lungs of a sheep) and I grabbed the heart (I had gloves on) and started squeezing it and going "Duh duh, Duh Duh, Duh Duh". All the girls went "EEEEEEEEWWWWWWW!!!".

    LOL

Then the funny bit happened. As I was doing that, a blod clot shot out of the heart and across the room and stuck the wall. The girls responses, were, collectively "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!".

Bear in mind the classes average age was roughly 9/10 at the time <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I open up the window, and i see this heart being at 99 BPM.

Yeah, ok... nothing special, then i move my mouse to X out of the screen and the SOB beats all the way up to 1200+ BPM!!

I nearly felt out of my seat, folled by the words:
    "OMGWTH?!"
    "HOLY CRAP!"
    and
    "AWSOME!"
    <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

[and then i realise that [heart] had to come from someone/something and i X out anyways.]

    That's just a natural mechanism.

No...wait....how the heck did it beat?! There sure isn't any artificial brain is there?
Maybe it's just a rubber model....that's wet and hasa waterproof motor.

And yes, assuming that the heart is dead, all the heart will do is overflow o_O

How that got that heart to beat, is waaaay beyond me. Could be artificial parts, could be a rubber heart w/ a motor. Could be Photoshop.

A heart does not need a brain to beat. It, along with many other organs, can perform without the aid of a brain. This is why you don't need to think about your breathing.
  • BogglesteinskyBogglesteinsky Join Date: 2002-12-24 Member: 11488Members
    its simple.

They just pass electrical pulses through the heart at regular intervals. You can see the wires...

Of course, the animation they showed was a loop of one heart beat. The heart would still need a blood supply to beat for much longer.

I don't see what's so gross about it... It's just a heart. It's not like it's mutated or something.

no no no the heart is myogenic and so controls its own "beat" if u will.

i could explain in more detail if u want but i need to find my biology notes.

The heart has it's own pacemaker. Other bodily functions we don't think about, like the movement of our digestive system, are controlled by (I believe) the medulla oblongata part of the brain. The heart, however, has a specific region that produces the electrical impulses that regulate the heartbeat. So, attach electrical wires to these areas and fire pulses of current and the heart will beat as if it were alive.
    Biology for the win.
