Question About Xp Reinstall Disc

BaconTheoryBaconTheory Join Date: 2003-09-06 Member: 20615Members
I have a question about the Windows XP reinstall disc. When I get my new computer, can I just use the XP reinstall disc from my Dad's Dell to put an OS on my new PC?

Doubtful. Most OEM's ship a "restore disk" which contains a disk image of all the crap that comes on storebought computers. Also, you can generally on install it on the correct brand of computer (in this case, a Dell). You'll probably have to shell out a few hundred bucks for another license of XP.

OK, but do most P4 Processors come with an OS unless specified otherwise?

Well yes that would be the most obvious and best solution, but not the easiest if he's never used Linux before

If you're dad has a Dell and you have a Dell, yes XP should work ( this from my experience )

My Dad has a Dell, but I have custom computer. I dont want to buy a new Windows license becasue it would set me back another $150 or so. I am pretty sure that most processors come with an OS anyhow, but I'll check on that.

No I don't think so. Check http://www.newegg.com/ for some good prices on XP Pro

    Edit: Here's a good one; http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-116-112&DEPA=6

I've never even HEARD of a processor coming with an OS. Processors aren't OS-dependant (aside from 64-bit vs. 32-bit), so why would a processor come bundled with an OS? The only way I know of to get an OS and a processor in the same box is to get a prebuilt computer.

Dang. Not good news. I'm leaning toward Linux at the moment. I've been thinking that it would be a fine alternative, but I'm concerned about compatibility issues with software.

If you want to play NS with Linux, ( I havn't tried it ), but I hear Wine should work with Steam

Well, it's do-able... You'd need Cedega for most games though, and it costs $15 Still cheaper than Buying Windows tho...

There also is a number of linux compatable games out there like, UT2kX, UT (original), Tribes 2, Americas Army, Wolfenstine ET, Tron 2.0, Quake 3, Savage, Neverwinter Nights, I beleive Doom 3 will too.

You can play windows games with Cedega though. It's available from TransGaming http://www.transgaming.com/

I suggest Mandrake 10 as a good Distro, It's what I use, it's easy-ish to use, installs easy and for the most part is compatable with most hardware. get it from here. http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3

Gentoo's pretty good also, but I don't know its compatibility with games

Will Half-Life 2 be Linux ready? (Since you're saying Doom 3 is)

Every major game will likely be compatible, as Transgaming will specifically add support for them. It's in the company's best interest to do that, since therefore they get more customers (since most people are too lazy to compile cedega on their own). And as for compatibility of various distros, it should theoretically be the same as long as they have the same version of wine/cedega/winex). I use gentoo on a system, and got steam working perfectly, as well as KoToR. I couldn't try stuff like FarCry, since the graphics card in that box is only a GF4MX, and the hard drive was waaaay too small.
