My friend said all it does it ask you to put a cd in of another windows version, showing proof that you own windows and that it is basically the "Windows XP Home Full" or whatever....

Do yourself a really big favor and get the full version. I've heard nothing but complaints from people who bought the upgrade version.

You can find the full version on various web stores that will ship straight to your door for the same price that you can buy the upgrade version at a Best Buy or other local stores. Generally, you're not supposed to buy the full version without purchasing some hardware. Most places are attaching screws or cheap mice with the purchase to get around this.

    Examples:

I have wiped clean a computer and installed the Windows XP Pro upgrade version on a completely untouched hard disk. All it wants is for you to insert and older version of Windows to prove you bought it. If you are using just about anything at all other than XP, buying the full version is a waste of hard earned cash.

The upgrade versions supposedly cannot be applied onto WinDoze 95 (and 3.1, duh).
