Need Data For Research Paper!

need as many people as possible!
This probably belongs in the off-topic forum but I think more people read the general forum so I'm posting it here

Here's the deal: I need some data for a research paper of mine about the internet social groups and social barriers, and I want people to answer my questions! People can either reply here or e-mail me the answers at tyl998@yahoo.com (which would be the preferred way really. Just put in the e-mail topic something about a research paper thanks). Everything will be anonymous. I will NOT share any personal data that can identify you or anything! Ideally I'd want about 20 people (or more) to respond. I need the data quickly because my paper deadline is coming up

Ok, onto the questions:

1) What is your gender?

2) Do you spend much of your time online?

3) What kind of social groups (this includes anything from just a close group of friends to organized groups like churches, school clubs, anything that involves you being in a group and doing social activity) are you a part of off-line?

4) Please briefly describe each group, and say if you notice any similar traits that everyone (or almost everyone) has in each individual group you're a part of. For example, is most everone White in this club? Is everyone from the same local area? Does everyone like the same thing? How diverse are the people in those groups?

5) Of the time spent online, what activies do you spend the most time on?

6) Same as question 3, except it pertains to on-line.

7) Same as question 4. Also pertains to online. Please note any common "similar" traits that seems to persist off-line but may disappear on-line for the most part. Also note any new similar traits that may appear.

8) Do you prefer online social activites to off-line ones? Why or why not?

Thanks for your time!

    1.) Im male.

2.) I spend quite a bit of my time online (and I wish I wouldnt...)

3.) I have a massive group of friends and we go to the beach almost every day (unless it's raining). I'm also in marching band.

4.) This is my first year in marching band (and yesterday was my first practice). I march for the grand haven buccaneers, and march at the home football games. (of course, so far marching band is no fun). I'm first chair cornet in the second band (so I have second part). We're playing music from pirates of the caribbean. Everyone in our band of around 120-150 students are white (we only have like 7 black people in our school...because thats how many live around here. its not like were racist or something). Everyone is from GH or the cities around it. No diversity.

    5.) Natural-Selection.

6.) No social groups online. I try to NOT make friends with people I meet playing games, or on the forums, etc.

7.) How can I describe an online group of friends when I don't have one?

8.) Off-line social activities any day.

    1) Male

    2) Yes...

    3) I have a small group of friends, we sometimes have LAN parties.

    4) We're all white geeks. Pretty much the same across the board. Some of us are interested in anime.

    5) Posting in forums, reading news, and playing games. Some times IRC.

    6) Part of a clan.

    7) Pretty much the same as my off-line group. White (as far as I know), geeks, and some of us like anime.

    8) Online, because off-line requires me to go places which requires more effort. I'm lazy, like most of my friends.

    1) male

    2) yus

    3) a jazz band, taekwondo, jujitsu, aikido, local rugby club

    4) jazz band - I play lead sax for the group - we just get together a couple of times a week and play for fun - nothing serious, only the occassional gig - 2 whites, 2 asians. all live on my street. i'm the only one of the 4 with any martial interest. 2 of them spend a lot of time online, 1 is just a music freak - he plays semi-professionally
taekwondo - am assistant instructor at a place locally - been there since i was about 5. regularly find my self down at the pub with some of the people from there. I myself am white, but the club is majority Asian (where I live, it's about 60% asian, 40% corkasian white (I think thats how you write it? I know what I mean - if that offends any one, not intended and I apologise))
    jujitsu - see above
    aikido - see above
local rugby club - just a bit of fun and some exercise. again, no serious commitment. mostly white folk this time, but our scrum half is an asian, and he by far best player in the team!
for all 4, all are local

    5) wasting hours on irc having amusing conversations

    6) part of jarhedz krew, and a few other little community things - nothing special

    7) no idea

    8) depend what i'm doing - i like online as you can just walk away at any point without needing an excuse and without any one asking questions but you don't get much feel for atmosphere so offline is better in that respect. I try to balance the 2 of them

    Ok, onto the answers:

    1) Male

    2) I'm gonna take a stab in the dark at this one and say yes... even though it wasn't phrazed very well...

    3) Cerch, werk, shcoll, and frends, speling clube (jk)

    4) Church is mostly white people, but that follows the small town population trend here... School is full of chineezes and koreans, freinds are 2third white, one third chineezes, spelling club contains only people of the imaginary type race...

    5) Foruming... Then, closely after, gaming.
    6) NS forums, HI forum, Lunix monser (server and forums) and that's pretty much it, other than emailing RL friends...

    7) People don't generally say thier race online, I can only guess my online friends are more diverse, since they come from a more randomly sampled population than my reallife freinds

    8) More or less equal... You can play NS online, which you can't do offline... But you can't drink online...

    1) Male.

    2) Check the post count. AKA yes.

    3) I'm in drama club, I sell tickets for all the school plays, I might join knowledge bowl or something when school starts up.

    4) Drama club has all the weird goth people. Our school is mostly white, so drama club is mostly white, but that doesn't mean only white people join it or something. I'm the only one who sells tickets, and I dunno who is in knowledge bowl.

    5) Toss up between games, reading about games/game news, and forums.

    6) Jeez. A Half-Life mod, a Half-Life 2 mod, a website, the NS forums, a bunch of IRC channels, I also play a few HL mods as part of a community. Also, I'm in a guild in Star Wars: Galaxies and used to play in a CS clan.

    7) Most of the people I know are Australian. Go figure.

    8) I don't neccesarily prefer online to offline, but since online you have the entire internet to choose from and offline you're limited, I enjoy online since I can meet smarter people. Plus I'm shy in real life so that makes it hard to enjoy offline stuff where I don't know the people involved.

    1) Male

    2) Almost all of my time...not necessarily online though, messing around on my comp in general.

    3) I've never been in any sports or after-school clubs...I really only leave my house to go to school.

    4) Well, it's not really a group but I do have one really good friend and about 5 others, but I don't like them very much. I'm very selective about who I call a friend, they have to be very intelligent (I judge this myself -- your GPA doesn't tell me how smart you are) and restrained; I don't want to be embarrassed by them in public in any way. In most cases he would have to know a lot about computers and I don't like people who go to parties and drink/take drugs or whatever.

    5) Probably half of my time is spent gaming...a quarter of it is spent fiddling around with things like programming (usually not games) and learning more about computers in general whenever I can. The rest of my time I might check bash.org if I'm bored but I read Maddox's site (http://maddox.xmission.com, http://maddox.xmission.com/dumbassjocks.html gives you a feel for his writing) whenever he updates it because although I've never met him he is one of the most thoughtful and intelligent people I've ever known.

    6) Well I do stuff with my friend when possible but there is also a group of people I hang around with online. We don't do anything specifically, usually just sit around on Ventrilo and maybe take up an MMORPG or FPS together; it's nothing serious like a clan.

    7) I haven't met the people I hang around with online (aside from my friend of course) but I've known them all for 6 years and I'm 18 now...I generally disapprove of socializing with people online (like getting personal with them) but they're all pretty respectable. Oh, and the 'group' consists of only 5-6 people not including me. I'm not really serious friends with any girls in real life because honestly the ones around here are all pretty dim.

    8) I prefer online activities because it really exercises your mind. Typing is much faster than speaking and also gives you more time to ponder things before you say something. Also, I've noticed that in school the only real subject that puts stress on your brain is math. English is just remembering rules and how to spell words, history is also memorization, and even science can be like that sometimes. I can feel the strain on my mind if I try to calculate something complex inside my head because the human brain isn't usually called on to do something like that. It's very gratifying to solve a problem in that fashion and I find I do it more often when I'm programming or just thinking about how things work. Some of my teachers (along with other adults) would rather have kids play sports than video games, but I find that they aren't very different (both usually involve hand-eye coordination) and in the case of RPGs you can become a better reader. People who don't understand computers also don't understand the allure of computer games...my mother doesn't understand how I can sit on this computer all day because when she looks at me she sees me sitting in a metal folding chair for like 8 hours. The internet's strength is also it's weakness -- it would be nothing without so many people using it, but because they only USE it (as opposed to understanding it too) it results in having a bunch of nubs running around online games or people who only use it to email their relatives. I like (maybe even need) to understand how something computer-related works on it's most basic level before I can feel confident in using it, and I wish everyone felt the same way. Basically, what I like most about computers is how it's like a direct interface with your mind; to other people it looks like you're sitting still but I may actually be running around and exploring a spaceship on NS or overworking my brain while learning something new.

    5) Gaming, chatting with friends, "Creative use of the Google Image Search"

    6) [FFT], NS.org, T2k....

    7) Well, most of the people i know are completely nuts too, There's my clan leaders who can sing like angels and cuss like sailors, the brittish bloke, the artistic one who can make weapon designs at the drop of a hat, and the eceltic mix on the boards

    Thanks again guys!

EDIT: Remember, the common traits aren't limited to the kind of stuff I listed. Nationality, race, etc are pretty common factors, but anything else really will help too!

    2) 14/18 hours a day, so yes.

    3) LAN Party organiser / School Mentor

    4) LAN Party organiser : I mainly make my back yard as a LAN area and get 8/10 friends round. Thats really only my out of school social time besides going to LAN centres and talking about the gaming scene

School Mentor : In school, me and 3 females ( mmmm ) have to privately teach 4/5 12/13yo kids with learning problems to read/write ETC. I find this activity quite social because we're a group of kids who just learn and have fun and talk about stuff.

    5) Natural Selection.. Computer Games and Idling mIRC..

    6) For NS, I'm part of [FFT].. a clan that is well known by the community by our stupidity and our NS themed songs. I'm also a DJ for NSRADIO and play music for the community, so i guess thats a social aspect too ^^. Computer Game groups online are with my close friends on Teamspeak servers, where we just play random games all the time as a guild/clan if you like. IRC is a social aspect to me, as i idle in many channels, made many friends and always have something to say =].

    7) I couldn't really say. You never know if the person on the other side is genuine or not.

    8) Online social time has to be better. Theres a wider range of things to do and the amount of people to talk to than just your little town or community.

    2.) 12-16 hours a day, a lot that is.
    3.) Nothing really, school only.
4.) Most of us who hang out at the same place have quite a lot of similarities. Quite many of us are in internet a lot.
5.) Natural-selection and chatting with friends, propably NS.
6.) IRL friends, clans and other friends.
7.) Most spend quite a lot time online and play same games.
8.) Being like i am, i prefer meeting people online. I usually get too excited when im supposed to meet someone for real.

    2) Surfing Internet: 4+ hours a day. If playing an online game counts, 6+ hours.
    3) Marching band, Dorm-mates in college, my "nerd" tech lovers, and my other friends who happen to be nerd girls.
    4) Marching band is very ethnically diverse (white, asian, latino) with a variety of interests in art, computers, rock bands etc. Being a university marching band, people are from all over California.
My close-to-heart "nerd" friends are all guys and computer/car lovers. Most are religious, and even though they know I'm not, they don't care. We all live close.
My nerd girl friends (not close or anything) are also an ethically diverse group (Italian, Korean, Japanese) who are into Johnny Depp, Harry Potter, LotR, Queer Eye, you know, girl stuff. We all live close.
    5) Playing online games. Surfing in forums.
    6) Almost all are computer game fans, mostly all male from all over the world.
    7) A varied group indeed, yet usually united for a single purpose, usually computer games. ^_^ You have various degrees of experience as well.
    8) However, I definitely prefer my offline friends over my online friends. Off-line friends are much more closer and personal. The good thing about online friends is that it's easy to hook up, but all you do is probably talk to each other over a game of CS. ^_^ But you can do lots more with off-line friends.

    Hope that helped.

    2) Yes

    3) Um, that would imply that I have a social life, which I don't.

    4) N/A I guess

    5) Gaming, hacking (good kind, not to be confused with cracking), pr0n, IRC, pr0n, Forums and pr0n.

    6) Well then... I'm in a NS clan (been there for about 1.5 years), I get along with those people verry well. I'm in a DoD clan with many of the people from my NS clan. I'm part of the Vietnam Combat group for BFV where I'm a private in the North Vietnamese Army. I belong to various Forums and I idle in about 17 IRC channles.

    7) My NS clan varies from a network admin from WA state that has 2 kids to stoner 17 year olds. In Vietnam Combat, there are people from all over the world, many parts of Europe and Nrth America as well as some Middle Eastern and Asian members.

    8) Online because people suck in real life. I'd rather not know the people I socialize with if that makes any sense.
