<div class="IPBDescription">thinking about getting a new one</div> I thinking about getting a new Processor probably a P4 2.6 ghz (or around that area) and I'm wondering if I would need to buy anything else like a fan or new mobo etc.

Right now I have a P4 1.6 ghz would it be worth buying a new one or would the effects me minimal?

The effects would be slightly noticable...

If you want a good processor, get an Athlon 64.

Mobo should be fine. The P4 will probably come with a fan, but if your computer runs hot, you like overclocking, or you value peace of mind, you might want to spring for a better fan. Keep in mind if your mobo is old it might limit the power of the Pentium due to a low FSB speed.

Well, if you gonna get Athlon processor, youre gonna need a new mobo. But if youre going with Pentium one, it might not be necessary.

    ESPECIALLY for gaming.

<a href='http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2149&p=7' target='_blank'>here</a> is a series of Doom3 benchmarks. As you can see, A64s are a GREAT value there.

If I want to upgrade my laptop's CPU to AMD Athlon 64, does anyone know how hard it would be?

Suppose we cure world hunger by capturing Osama, killing him, making his carcass gigantic, and then feeding the meat to third-world countries?

Get one in the 2500+ to 3000+ range from AMD barton... Awesome performance processors which outspank the pentium4 and aren't all that exspensive. Just make sure its a <b>Barton</b> and not a xp.

Barton has twice the amount of onboard level1 cache then an xp and even more then any pentium4 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

an athlon barton 2500 to 3200+ ratings are THE BEST cheap chip. theyre strong enough for anything these days. (maybe a new sempron too)

AthlonFX/Opterons are the BEST super-expensive chip.

p4's are good midrange, which may be what you want right now.

    never buy a celeron.

    Celerons = TEH Suck

would the Barton require a new Mobo or anyhting because I'm not rolling in dough atm

    Yes, it would.

P4 uses Socket 478 as well as a bunch of other socket #'s

    Athlon XP uses Socket A

Athlon 64 uses socket 754 or socket 940 for the expensive ones.

    So yes, new Mobo...

all of this athlon; athlon64, athlonfx sillyness mean a new motherboard, but even the athlonXP route is good, 90$ processor and 90$ mobo that can outpace your current setup or even the p4 2.6 you were looking at.

Celeron's aren't really bad processors, they're just not designed for heavy loading like the Athlon and Pentium 4 serie's. If you're trying to go for a budget, then I recommend buying the highest compaitable processor for your mobo. If you have the money and want to purchase a new motherboard and processor, then you're going to be spending atleast $200 minimum for all the extra components. I'm more of an Athlon series fan than a Pentium 4 fan, but Pentium 4's run just as fine as Athlon's -- Non 64-bit of course. I also recommend Athlon XP's because they're more bang for their buck compared to Pentium 4's. An Athlon XP rated at 2 GHZ will run as fast as a Pentium 4 with 2.6 GHZ.

Here's a list of the basic stuff for a motherboard.

Motherboard, RAM, Processor, Processor Heatsink, and a power supply (optional). The reason you may need a new powersupply is because a new motherboard may require alot more voltage than what you currently use. Having a 500w powersupply is good anyway because it makes your system run alot more stable.

    Look online at <a href='http://www.pricewatch.com' target='_blank'>http://www.pricewatch.com</a> and <a href='http://www.newegg.com' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com</a>
    Great bargains!

Here's a cheap bargain upgrade I came up with. This is more of the casual gamer upgrade than the 1600x1200 guy with 8x antialiasing.

    Athlon XP:
    Mobo: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-468&depa=1' target='_blank'>$68</a>
    Processor: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-394&depa=1' target='_blank'>$140</a>
    Heatsink: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-031&depa=1' target='_blank'>$26</a>
    Memory: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-141-413&depa=1' target='_blank'>$92</a>
    Power Supply: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-167-005&depa=1' target='_blank'>$30</a>

    Total: $356
This is excluding if you want a videocard or soundcard.
As you can see, its pretty expensive. But, this is just a "cheap" system. I would have gone for the Athlon XP+ 3200 and a better mobo. But, that'll be during December when the prices drop <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->. Athlon XP+ 2200 and 512MB for me for now.

Let's not forget the other alternative, which is getting the highest compaitable CPU for your mobo.

barton runs on a socket A, which is the same as the athlon XP or the normal athlon (its predecessor <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

nubs... Socket A runs all the athlon xp/duron processors - Barton is just the name of the latest core (with the 512kb cache and 333/400fsb)

If you've already got a P4 board I'd check first in it's manuals or whatever and see what the highest it can take is - most of the P4's aren't all that expensive anymore and if you don't have to buy a new motherboard you save more $$ (you can always upgrade the mobo later to one with the new chipsets and goodies like pci-x, then upgrade video card and cpu and stuff afterwards)

Also if you buy an Athlon you WILL be buying a new heatsink/fan (unless you like things burning). The stock P4 ones are adequate but the Athlon ones suck.

I'm glad someone made this post becasue I'm building a buget computer that has half-decent performance. I'm loking at a P4 2.4ghz and my total PC price is $377.

If I were to get a half-decent Athlon and compatible mobo, would I go over my price range?
