some techie help me!
EDIT: forget it, it's fixed, read the end if you want to know what was wrong lock/delete thread if you want.
oi... so I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but I think I would have noticed it if it had been more than a few days... yet I can't remember anything I could have done to mess it up...
basically, stereo/positional audio isn't working right... in games like doom3 and thief3, I run around like my character is almost deaf in his right ear - when someone is talking, for instance, I have to face 90 degrees to the right so I can hear them loud and clear in my left headphone or speaker, because positional sound can only be heard extremely faintly if at all through the right speaker...
and no, it's not something stupid like a loose connection or speaker balance, because normal sound files and MP3s and stuff come in at normal volume in both speakers... the problem is only with positional audio in games, apparently...
as for the specs, I've got onboard SoundMAX sound on my ASUS mobo... I tried uninstalling and updating the drivers, to no avail... looked all through the driver's control panel - can't find anything that would help... balance is normal under windows volume control... I'm at a loss...
in device manager, under "sound, video and game controllers", I see too many things IMO - for audio, besides my "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" I see "ATI WDM Rage Theater Audio" which must have something to do with my 9600 pro video card... I see "Legacy Audio Drivers" which is god knows what... and I see "audio codecs"...
I have no idea what's wrong so I'm just giving all the info I could think to check. I ran 'dxdiag' and my DirectSound seems OK... anyone have any brainstorms?
thanks in advance - I really want to start enjoying Doom 3 fully =P
edit: new development, I turned the 'master' balance slider under Windows volume control, all the way to the right, and sound basically went out... and then I turned it all the way to the left and sound in both headphones went way up... which suggests that maybe both speakers and headphones are receiving only the left headphone signal? why would that be?
edit 2: BAH why does it always seem problems like this get figured out right after you post complaining about them? I just tried unplugging my speakers and plugging my headphones straight into the computer instead of into the speakers, and it's better... so it's just a speaker problem, not a software or sound card problem; guess I was just overreacting ~_~ but, bah, guess i need new speakers
