Very nice, actually. Once you get it, I'd format the drive and stick XP Pro on it instead, and I'd add another 512 MB of RAM.

Truth to this indeed. XP pro has tons of advantages, htough XP overall will make those 512mb into 128 reeeeeal fast.
  • RustySpoonRustySpoon Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18069Members
Yes I was planning to do that. Xp pro I mean. Is there any chance my old stick of 512 sd will work on that?

is it really that bad? Why is pro so much better?

  • RustySpoonRustySpoon Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18069Members
Ok looks like the first one just got out of my price range (700).
    But never fear!

    PProcessor AMD XP 3000+ FSB333
    160Gb 7200rpm hdd
    4x/24x/40x DVD+/DVD+RW/CDRW
    512MB DDR
    Äänikortti
    Näytönohjain ATI Radeon 9550, 128Mb, TV-out, DVI-out

I dunno what the mobo is, which is why I just asked the guy.

Thats actually not that bad. Youre power supply is fine and the video card is good. You're actually getting a decent comp...whats the price?
  • RustySpoonRustySpoon Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18069Members
He's asking 600 for it, but the bid only ends in 8 hours.
  • SwiftspearSwiftspear Custim tital Join Date: 2003-10-29 Member: 22097Members
Its a decent comp if its new, but for if its used... you could build a comp nicer than that for 600

I side with swiftspear, the first one was nice but the second I think it's not worth paying 600 euroes for <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Name these features that XP pro has that dont exist in XP Home. And of them which are useful to someone buying a computer for personal use? I think you will find that 90% of the time, people dont need the Professional edition.

Mostly just dev features, more tweakability, the ability to debug code and what not, mostly useless features, but a few golden ones...

sorry, no. new computers and newish ones use DDR-RAM, which is incompatible with SD-RAM.

if you ever see it listed as DDR-SD-RAM thats the same as DDR-RAM

Well I tryed putting together a 600 euro pc but it just keeps slipping out of range, and I've already tired all my friends, since only they understand anything about mobos cases and coolers. I have simply no idea how they work.

Anyone mind pointing out some nice 600-650 machine wich could run hl doom and stalker, thats all I really need (run DECENTLY mind you)

I dont' really know how the euro compares to the American dollar, but if I understand much about the price of hardware in europe, I don't think your gonna have too much luck in that department. Your talking about machines that if sold here, would come without video cards, let alone the ability to run DOOM 3. Some of the better bargan hunters on these boards might be able to build a decent tower in the states for 600 american dollars, but were talking about parts from computer shows and bargain shelfs here, hardly common comp shop deals...

All right last bump, I promise.

This guy has given me a take-it-or-leave-it offer of 630 euros + 11 for shipping for this thing

    Processor AMD XP 3000+ FSB333
    160Gb 7200rpm
    4x/24x/40x nopeus DVD+/DVD+RW/CDRW-tallentava asema
    512MB DDR
    10/100
    ATI Radeon 9550, 128Mb, TV-out, DVI-out
    MICRO-ONE LCD ATX-case and power
ASROCK K7S8XR3.0 SiS746FX mobo (hebrew for me)
    4xUSB 2.0
    ATA133 support
    DDR400 support
    8xAGPsupport
    1XAGP/6XPCI, 3XDDR expnasion slots

He's saying that the mobo can be changed, but that affects the price (obviously)

Give me your feelings on this one, since I really need something for doom hl and stalker

(remember I was planning to change to a 9800)
  • SwiftspearSwiftspear Custim tital Join Date: 2003-10-29 Member: 22097Members
Why on earth do you want to change the mobo? its the only part on that computer that seems to be running high specs. It might not last you forever, being a small name manufacturer, but it has 6PCI slots, and 8x AGP, support for DDR 400 ram, and supports the CPU your buying it with.

Thats a nice macine there, other than the fact that it need another chip of RAM, and the video card is archaic.

Oh, and you should really find out the wattage on your power supply, its just something nice to know...
  • RustySpoonRustySpoon Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18069Members
But budgetwise a good purchase? This guy seems fairly reliable he has thousends of compliment emails and he even gave me a discount when I didnt meet his required price.
  • RustySpoonRustySpoon Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18069Members
    All right, THE last bump.

The guy says ther's a 300w power in the machine, someone enlighten me on this one, since I have no idea what that means.

So is it a worth-it purchase?
  • SwiftspearSwiftspear Custim tital Join Date: 2003-10-29 Member: 22097Members
meh, good enough, it will run right off the bat, and if you start putting parts in and getting power problems, a 400W PSU isn't that expensive. You should be able to upgrade to your 9800 pro without errors at least.
  • RustySpoonRustySpoon Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18069Members
And from what I've heard the x800 uses less power than 9800?
  • ZelZel Join Date: 2003-01-27 Member: 12861Members
save your money and get a decent computer next month.

a generic 300W power supply is worthless. a name brand 300W is good, or a generic 450W, but a generic 300 will pop if you stress the computer.

same goes for that ASROCK motherboard, it might have nice specs, but its a pretty poor manufacturer, and could very well die on you in a year.
