Honestly? That last pic looks like the napalm factory in Postal 2. Which goes to proove (yet again) that every game has points where it looks like crap, and points where it looks great.

It fakes it, just like every game that casts shadows the same way kotor, half-life 1, and even quake 1 does, it just has all shadows pointing the same direction.

Kinda crappy that the model shadows have barely improved over what was in Quake 1, but oh well. The rest of it is omfgdeadsexy.

Well the other pictures I have seen locate the shadow directly under the model that is casting them, so if that's faking it, its better than alot of the other fakes I have seen...

that shot that travis posted doesn't do justice to farcry. It really is a brilliant game (graphically). If we had a rendered HL2 jungle and a Farcry pic then you could say which is better. Infact, even then it would be down to personal preference with the whole "cartoony" thing. It does look somewhat cartoony but it also makes it look amazing.

does anyone know if HL2 can even do jungles well? It's a lot of polys with all those trees. Anyone know how much HL2 can handle?

HL2 doesn't do much foiliage well. If it ever does jungles they will probably do them the same way the HI team did congo in HL.

I wish they would have made the video longer... Oh well it looks very nice. Just as a thought, while HL2 is a great looking game and all. I think valve is pushing more towards great gameplay and replay value over a super realistic game that isn't much fun.

HL2 just looks more impressive in movement than screenshots. Seeing the game in videos makes me wet my pants, but screenies are dull for HL2.

Half Life 2 is hitting on something completely different than either Far Cry or Doom 3.

HL2 is about people living in an Orwellian world, vs Far Cry's "soldier vs soldier" and Doom 3's "horror/survival."

HL2 promises to deliver something very different than any FPS, and the graphical quality to go along with it. I think to make my point, all I will need to do is bring up the focus on people in the creation of Source and HL2. The G-Man demos and photos say something very powerful about how Gabe and friends were thinking when they created the game.

I also have this feeling that Half Life 2 will be even more vague than Half Life was. I'm hoping that this "vagueness" will become something even better, aka a new type of FPS replayability.

The people of HL2 will be what the game is remembered for, in my opinion. But I suppose we'll just have to wait for HL2. Hurry up Valve!

After looking at these screenshots, who besides me would die if they heard the next Elder Scrolls game was to come out on the HL2 engine?

yea, that'd be awesome. With every line of dialog recorded by voice actors and made to fit with the lip syncing. Morrowind was a great looking game, with more model and character detail it'd be amazing. The capability of source can also be seen in the Vampire The Masquerade (spelling??) game.

A year ago Gabe Newell answered an e-mail of mine and said HL2 could handle a forest, so hopefully that has not changed. If it can do a forest I'd imagine a jungle wouldn't be that much harder.

Then I hope that someone makes a FarCryish sort of mod and all farcry fanbois will shutup.

I'd rather have a Jurassic Park mod, replete with Dr Allan Grant and Dennis Nedry.
