Even panicky doom 2 style run and gun with lots of enemies(even if they have to look like crap in order to accomodate more than a few of them) would have been much more fun. Explosions and gun sounds where appaling as far as I played and I expected at least as many puzzles as doom 2, even simple ones with buttons, moving things etc. I at least expected to have to be awake to play it, but no, allmost every single monster gave me 5 seconds warning before actually trying to hurt me. Zombies where the only silent stalking monsters that I encountered and you pretty much knew where they where going to be hiding very quickly.
In general I despise games that make huge sacrifices in gameplay just to be technologically advanced.
I got to hell in doom3 and I've not played it since. Mainly because I have no interest in going any further because I have killed ever enemy and I have got all the guns.
There are no 'hidden' areas that you have to shoot out a grate and crawl into, everything is hidden under stairs(!!). I did find the game to be very repetitive but it did look good <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
6/10 for doom 3
Edit: Yeh as the post above this one says. The sounds were shocking......except the plasma gun, I liked that

I have a mod that lets me shoot out the Hell Knights fireballs instead of using fists, and I was shooting people and boxes in the first level with that. The physics seemed to work that whole time, how are they "buggy"?
To me, 95% of the sounds are horrid. I also have the old sound replacement pack.
I've been more scared of DOOM, I've been more scared of Natural-Selection, I've been more scared of Alien Swarm, I've been more scared of Silent Hill 2, I've jumped more in Counter-Strike.
All in all?

Personally what annoyed me the most was the original doom style way that enemies entered rooms.
Not teleportation (I wouldn't have minded that), not through the doors, not even breaking through stuff. No, what made me angry was the reliance on, sliding panel opens up to allow more enemies in.
It really killed the realism for me when I saw a panel open up and some more enemies come streaming out. How many freaking zombies in the closet can one game have?
They didn't even try to make it believable. They could have put a few wires in the rooms the zombies were in to make it look like they were technitions working on something when hell broke loose. No, it looks exactly like it was: We want to save time on scripting and map design so we will just stuff a few zombies and imps into the walls.
One thing I don't like that they've done (luckily not often but they still broke a gaming rule of mine all the same) was they put in attacks that'll pretty much guaranteed hit you unless you 100% know they're coming. An example early on is when you're running along to a door, door opens, WHAM!!! fire-chucker screaming thingy leaps on your face. It's not even scary, it just feels cheap and annoying but luckily I've only had it occur the once that really bothered me =P

I have to say it was one of the best games I've played. The graphics were amazing, the lighting and use of it was awesome. It's scared me a good many times, and not just pop-out scary. Some of the enviroments and the sounds that accompanied them were down-right horrifyingly real. For example, when you are on the floor below the place where you first see the lost souls, and can hear the person up above? I was on edge the whole time.

I bought it, but barely played it yet, because it runs amazingly **** on my amd 64 3000+, 1gig, memory fx5700 ultra. i'd hoped the processor and ram would compensate for the mediocre card...boy was i wrong. But for the little bits i played, sorry, but i havent been really scared yet.

I think I know now why there's such a big spread in opinion about doom 3.
It's fun being frightened when you know it's not real and can't be hurt(hence roller coasters and various horror games)
I find doom 3 less scary than tetris all in all. At least in tetris you get your heart pumping slightly above normal rate when you're about to lose and you're on a record breaking run.
The most frightening thing they can put in a game for me would be creatures that really stalk you, don't make a whole lot of noise and hurt you plenty before you have much time to react if you fail to spot them in time and hordes of respawning enemies and not enough ammo to shot them all. And it should feel like it really matters if you lose or not. Doom 3 has none of this.
I'm totally unafraid of the dark. Nasty looking things, spinning flying corpses, weird "hallucinations" or various falling junk and steam bursts only have a little startle value for me.
If you removed everything you find scary from doom 3, is there anything left that you enjoy at all?
