my first time through i tried to hurt no one, but they kept shooting at me so i knccked out about 90% of the enemies with the baton, but it gets too hard when theyre coming at you with big robots and such....
what? a social life? blasphemy. i haven't talked to another human IRL since i downloaded NS.
on another note, i did open up FF7 again today (pc version), only to ask myself "Why am I doing this? What makes me think I'll actually spend 500 hours doing this **** when I haven't even beaten the game yet? Hm." and promptly closed the game. i then proceeded to spend the next 5 hours playing starcraft.
moral of the story: FF7 is boring after you know the story. why would anyone want to spend 500 hours ... ugh.

Use that strategy and build a "prison" base. [Put all your prisoner aliens into that base, and equip the guards with the most lethal equipment you can find.] Then get the aliens to attack it. Massacre...
One of my favorite's is to alter the stats of one soldier with a cheat program, give him the best stuff and highest allowable skills (there's a bug in throwing accuracy; put it too high and it wont funtion at all!) then go through the entire game with only him.
Yes, it may be cheap, but you have no idea how it feels to defeat a snake-man terror mission where all the civilians were turned into Crysalids. At night.
[Another favorite of mine is to alter the high explosive's damage amount to double it's original (or highest possible) and use only high explosives to fight the aliens. Regardless, theres nothing that urgent to do in life that a measly 500 hours will upset the grand scheme of things. Maybe some people just like doing that sort of thing after work - that doesn't mean they think all day about it, or they dedicate their whole day to it. Hell, if they did dedicate their whole day to it they'd only be busy for less than 50 days.
Sure, unlike other things you can do in 500 hours, you won't be able to brag about that, but I guess that gives it a zen-like quality <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
P.S. I just finished FF8 With a Level 95/Str255 party (25hours or so total - I'd never completed it before, only got about 80% through beore I lost my save), but I agree I could never do what they did, simply because it doesn't even remotely appeal to me.
people are so crazy with these FF 'challenges' that I can't even comprehend it. these people are trying to get to level 99 in the first reactor in FF7. they estimated it will take about 500 hours; some people have already put in 300 or 400 hours. it just boggles my mind - how could that possibly be fun... I started another thread recently about how I rarely even FINISH the games I play; meanwhile some people play these games so far into the ground, they go through the core of the earth and out the other side...

I've seen that stun rod one elsewhere... you can still go on base raids and landed ufo's, as well as terror missions... so you can still research.
As for Vengeance play, I did make a game where I had all the tech and almost infinite creds. Was beautiful. First Chrys mission and I just power suited a bunch of rines all over the map blaster bombing everything. Its the only way to be <i>sure</i>.

This scenario takes its name from the beaurocratic "bean counters" who drive us crazy with their constant cost cutting measures. You are not allowed to destroy anything, since that wastes profits. You are not allowed to shoot down any UFOs, since that destroys valuable artifacts that can be sold. You can not use any explosives or any weapon that uses a clip or ammunition, since those would have to be replaced. You are only allowed to use reusable items, like lasers, flares, stun rods, and psi-amps.
Neo-Pacifist
You are a Pacifist and can not directly take the life of any living thing, even an alien. You can not shoot down any UFO, because aliens might be killed. You can not use any weapon that can kill an alien, even via reaction fire. Aliens who die during interrogation or because of lack of space in the alien containment facility are someone else's problem, so your conscience is clear.
The only lethal weapons that you can use are grenades, but you must still give the aliens a chance to escape. In this way, the alien causes its own death. For example, an alien next to an armed explosive with a long fuse can save it self by moving away, while an alien next to an armed Proximity Grenade can save itself by not moving away.
Even with these restrictions, the game can still be won by mind controlling an alien on Mars and having him stand next to an armed Proximity Grenade which was placed next to the master brain. Once this is ready, you release your control and wait for the alien to move, ending the game.
This scenario was very hard in the early stages, with very heavy casualties until the Stun Launcher was researched. This was my favorite scenario, because the logic was so perverse and because of the new tactics I learned.
Technophobe
You have a morbid fear of all technology. You must sack all of your scientists and engineers at the start of the game. You must sell all alien artifacts immediately. If you can not buy the item, you can not use it.
This scenario forces you to learn how to use conventional weapons against the aliens. You can not win this scenario in the normal sense, since you can never go to Mars. You simply play it until you don't want to play it any more. I stopped after about one game year, having destroyed all of the alien bases on the planet. <!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2--> --XComUtil homepage
So if it is not allowed by all of those then it is not allowed. Basically it means you only get to use Stun Rods.

A great challenge is beating Majora's Mask in three days, excluding the 3 days you're stuck as a Deku Scrub. Speed Runs are the most entertaining of all the Game Challenges I must say.
They have someone doing the Majora's Mask one on SDA:
