<div class="IPBDescription">Programs That Might Work "Differently"</div> A friend of mine sent me this in an email titled
"Programs that Service Pack 2 will **** up."

I took a closer look at the link
<a href='http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130' target='_blank'>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130</a>
and I don't think he was far wrong.

The page is titled:
"Programs that may behave differently in Windows XP Service Pack 2"
and headings like this
"842242 Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2"
hardly inspire confidence do they?

There's a full list of affected programs on the page if you want
to check out what you'll be putting at risk if you, at some point,
have to download SP2.

I'm not in any rush to download Service Pack 2, and doubt I
ever will be with the constant growing reports that SP2 is causing
more problems that it solves.

Has anybody here downloaded SP2? Has it caused any hassles?
Views/opinions/comments/religious sacrifices here please.

QUICK EDIT:
I feel I should point out that i'm not saying you should or shouldn't
download SP2. I'm simply saying you should check out the known
issues and faults before you accidently screw some of your most used
programs / games up.

Have you ever used a software firewall, such as ZoneAlarm? There is a "learning" phase where programs request access to the Internet, and the software firewall requests confirmation. This is what is done in Windows XP.

Also, many sites on the Internet use download managers that say "Please wait five seconds for your download to start, otherwise click here". These will no longer work for security reasons - too many malicious sites opening download requests and stupid users clicking "okay" to get rid of the pop-up.

"Differently" does not mean "broken". However, XP is evil.

So your saying that if your not an idiot, you don't need SP2 anyways?

It finally improves upon Internet Explorer 6 (although, since it's still Internet Explorer, it's not <b>much</b> of an improvement), and it adds some tighter security to Window's Firewall. It's a worthwhile download, even for advanced users. Tighter security in a computer is always a good idea, regardless of the expertise of the user.

Also, the Wireless component seems to work a bit better. It used to take 15-20 reboots to get my laptop to recognize the existance of networks, now it only takes a few reboots <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Oh, and for the sake of comparison and XP-bashing, said wireless works perfectly in Linux, with the exact same drivers as windows (since there are no *nix drivers for my card - I curse the name "Linksys").

Yay! Now Vice City won't install and Call of Duty is broken beyond all reason!

I heard from the Buzz forums that after installing SP2, Buzz does not work at all. Because of this I'm delaying the install of SP2 until someone confirms that Buzz can actually be run afterwards, or Microsoft fixes the issues with pre-SP2-programs.

One program that breaks is, unfortunately, Nero Burning ROM (for those who don't know, it's a killer CD-burning program). Apparently, SP2 changes Windows' ATAPI protocol and Nero can no longer make use of it.

I imagine Nero will be patched soon to fix the issue, but an issue it certainly is.

It's a good fix - the change is a serious improvement. But yes, the "breaking everything" side effect is unfortunate.

Yea, it also breaks Relic's .big extractor so I can't get the wonderful Homeworld 2 soundtrack. Great timing.

Well, I'm going on my roommate's word -- I run Win2k, so the SP doesn't affect me. He said that it broke Nero, though. *shrug* Maybe it depends on your version (since Nero releases a new version every other day, practically).

Don't ever say "All" AOL users. There are a lot of us that are trapped here because of slow/inane/lazy parents.

I myself have this to say: SP2 kicks ****, all except for 1 thing: It breaks mIRC if you have the firewall on. Just turning it on will disconnect you from IRC litterally 30 seconds after you connect, which just totally sucks. D:

I use Nero 6.0.0.0 and it works fine. I have however had problems with Photoshop CS, which I don't see on that list.

Doom3 Seems to work better too.
