Parallax Mapping enhances Doom3's Gfx...
Parallax Mapping Mod enhances Doom3's graphics engine by applying parallax mapping to all textures. Parallax mapping, also known as virtual displacement mapping, is a recent graphical technology that gives surfaces more depth and realism. Using a heavily modified vertex and pixel shader and a mix of custom and simulated height maps, this mod makes surfaces look more three-dimensional by offsetting bumps depending on your view. Although you may not see an obvious difference right away, look closely at surfaces and you will see an improvement compared to original Doom3. Most bumps will look like they're actually sticking out. This mod also works in user-made levels that have custom textures, and a tutorial is included to describe how to add optional height maps to your level for a true parallax effect.

NOTE: This mod requires at least a Radeon 9500 or GeForce FX

When I pick up a Radeon 9700 or 9800 in about 8 weeks, I'll take a look at getting this, as well as the Ultra-Extreme-Quality mod which adds in sweet self-shadowing on characters.

    Hehe, that's a funny sentence.

It looks alright, but i never liked doom3 anyway...

Can you mix this with the UEQ mod?

I dunno - it's clever, and looks good a lot of the time. However, there are a bunch of things that look very ugly with this new shader - elevator floors are a good example.

I'll install this once its patched to work great(unless it has a way to uninstall it). Good find though

I imagine you just uninstall it by deleting its .pak file.

    Yeah, thank God.

Okay, I installed and put it in, and man, I don't know what this guy was smoking, but frankly, this thing STINKS.

First off, it overpixelated the textures. I maen to the point of making the game look like HL.

2nd off, it KILLS performance like hell. I was getting 40 fps before- now I'm getting 6. WTHh4x

Lastly, it basically TURNS OFF all of the lights. Seriously. They are there, but they don't actually light anything. At all.

Really, the effect is only cool for the muzzle flash against monsters, because then they look QUITE amazing, seriously.

I'd only reccommend if you've got one hell of a monster system, and if you can stand it being MUCH Darker. Like, too much. Really Dark. Yeah.

Do you have at least a Radeon 9500 or GeForce FX? If so, are you up to Catalyst 4.8?

The heck are you on about, Quaunaut? The lights still work fine for me, and I don't see any of the pixellation you're speaking of. Slowdown is kinda hefty, but not as unbearable as you're getting...

You sure you have an R9500 or GFFX card, or better? Needs working pixel shaders to pull this off, apparently.

Talesin - the site I grabbed the mod from (filefront I think) had a bunch of user comments about light bugs the same as quaunaut's - must be some genuine bug somewhere in it, though it seems to work just fine for most people.

I've got more than what I should need- GeForce FX 5600XT 256mb. It seems I need a ATi to make it work.

Edit: Could this maybe help out my performance with it? I know its not exactly relevant, but will that driver help me at all over the usual forceware NVidia has?

Well, given the fact that nVidia cards cut corners like crazy on Doom3 just to be playable (and do not allow end-users to un-cut said corners) it's quite possible that it's the card causing the problem.

Tried this mod, made doom3 looks like crap up close, which really was where the only improvements were needed anyway.

I didn't want to shamelessly bump, but I didn't want to make a new thread either. What about those detonator drivers there? Are they better than the usual forceware?

its a mod... he could have tested his work on an ATi card and forgotten about Geforce...

Which should still work, given that it's operating within the standard Doom3 framework. Or perhaps you're agreeing that nVidia isn't supporting the D3 functions in full and correctly?
