<div class="IPBDescription">Surpluss PC's FTW.</div> Well, I do a lot of computer work at my school. That is to say, I plug in teachers's computers when they say they think they cought a virus <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Anyway, My schools tech guy is letting people like myself who do a lot with "fixing" computers around the school, take home surpluss PC parts <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

We get batches of new Dells every year and we a crap load of Spare PS's laying around. He's letting us salvage whatever we can carry away. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'd say a few 30 gig HD's and some ram (128 meg sticks) would go together nicley with the bits and peices I have laying around (533 mhz Celeron and mobo and case. Oh, I should also grab a CD drive...

It'll make a nice little toy for me to play with. Oh, also a crap load of 17 inch monitors

And best of all, FREE!!! Maybey I can get some of those 900 mhz Pentium 3's too and throw together a whole decent PC with it. YAY.

They are mostly older computers though. I'm happy.

    Nice one, but you think the school would have been smarter and donated the stuff somewhere else, or sold it for some bling.

    There's about 4 or so people that get this honor, and there are 70 or so PC's laying around. Most of em are going to elementary schools around the area.

    Now, I just need to find a friend with a car...

    I'm a computer techy at my school too...arent I cool!?!!!

    Anyways, we get new computers every 2 years (Dell computers). Since I attend a small school (80+ students), we just got 35 new computers. All are Pentium 4 2.6ghz, with radeon 9200's ( I think) and 512mb of ram.

    Our 2 year old computer are all 1.6ghz, and radeon 7500's. I wonder if my teacher would let me borrow one or two.... <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Slap one together and use it to just store files.

    I just thought of a better Idea. I'll Install Mandrake 10 on it and hook it up to my stereo and have a nice mp3 jukebox, with xmms vizualizations.

    Can I have a monitor?! PLEEEEEAAAASSEEEE? No, just kidding - shipping would be too expensive for me.
  • JediYoshiJediYoshi The Cupcake Boss Join Date: 2002-05-27 Member: 674Members
    Cheaper than buying the actual moniter though <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Yes, but I don't <i>need</i> another monitor. It would be nice for Photoshop stuff, but not necessary.

    Whatever, I was gonna say HL server, but I changed it at the last second since I figured it would be more applicable to these boards.

    You are very lucky indeed. At my school we are using 200Mhz, 15" monitors, and running Windows 95 (for my class and maybe another, there are newer computers in other places). For the love of god! 95! I THINK IT'S TIME TO UPGRADE!

    Hey you could definately set up a decent LAN. Have some ol' starcraft games going around and some old school nostalga running. Nothing like tampering with your own network.

    Wow. You guys are lucky.

    Me and my friends are more tech-savvy than our network technicians here, and they don't let us touch anything. At all.

    I went into Network Managment in my school and it doesn't have any of those stuff....
    Not even fridges o_O

    And when it was about to be almost the end of school (aka use the computers in school all day) the school network had been hit with a virus. GG firewall and Norton Corporate Edition (yes they use that crap)

    So yeah, they probably don't trust me and my friends (mostly because instead of being on duty, we're really busy playing AoE2 XD )

    Though I can tell you that they really let us down when our personal 10 gig harddisks went down in a server malfunction =_____=
    Turned out the thing overheated due to extremely poor ventilation

    Our schools server only had a 40 gig hard drive, until I convinced my teacher to buy a 200gig HDD.

    Our teacher (computer) is so awsome, after school we all play Age of empires 2 on lan or half life and he lets us download whatever we want. Yay!

    Yea, I had Steam installed on school computers for a while <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Last year, I would show up at 7 am and school didn't start till 9:45 On Thursdays (crappy schedule) and we would play HLDM on a lan <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    For the last 3 weeks of school our IT class played ghost recon every day. Our computer teacher is new to the school as of last year, and he is responsible for maintaining the old and archic network and teaching every class from grade 8-12. Basicly he runs around swearing all day long...

    Good times <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
