Working out?@?@ WHA/!
Yes, I know it may be a foriegn concept for most of you people but I wanna know if there is anyone else here that works out on a regular basis. If so what types of food do you eat to give you energy and what types of exercise do you do.

I started approximately 2 months ago and I am looking for new ways to shape my upper body. Any general advice would be appreciated.

Whats a healthy workout? What shouldn't you do? What should you do? Really any questions that relate to working out I would like answered.

P.S. No I am not trying to impress someone or anyone, this is strictly for self-accomplishment.

Eating sticks of butter like candy bars. The muscle just packs itself on. Oh and sit around and play video games as much as possible, exercizing just breaks down your muscles, which you don't want.

Get a routine and dont skip, you'll just get lazy. Dont overwork one muscle, it will actually break it down. Alternate between pecs, biceps, triceps, lats, ect.. Eat lots of carbs, pastas and rice. Protein too.

It depends: what are you trying to do? Build endurance, strength, or just tone up and improve physically? I used to run cross country and lift weights, so I should be able to point you in the right direction.

I am working my upper body so I am lifting a lot of weights and working out my abs. I also run 2 miles a day for my cardio.

I really want to get rid of my pot belly and build some muscle, thats really my ultimate goal.

Also what cereal do you eat? I found Total Protein to be the only cereal with a lot of protein in it(except its low carb ).

if you're running 2 miles DAILY, then that's no sweat. make it 4 miles every OTHER day.

on top of that, do lots of pushups and crunches. do 100 crunches twice (or three times) a day. do your max set of pushups three or more times a day. if you have a pullup bar, even better, do pyramid pullups.

what to eat.. eat healthy stuff. you don't have to count your calories all that much if you're running 4 miles every other day. peanut butter sandwiches, bananas, meat, bread, pasta, salad.. whatever. just try to limit the stuff that is 100% bad.

The best bet for getting rid of that pot belly is burning off the fat and working out the stomach muscles. I would worry about doing that before before moving on to resistance training, unless you want to have pot belly and chest muscles.

For chest workouts, use the benchpress, and also use barbells or dumbells to isolate certain areas of the pecs. If you want to work out the outer pecs stretch out the very top corner of your chest as your going down and push inwards to the middle of your body at the same time as your going up. To work out the inner pecs use the angled bench. There are many ways to work out your muscles, and there might be people who know a lot of this stuff at your local gym. I'm a hardgainer, so my advice wouldn't work for you.

For the abs I reccomend a situp machine. It's something any well-equipped gym should have. Basically, it lets you do situps where you start lying at a downward angle, thus forcing you to pull your torso up much further than normal. 3 sets of 15-20 situps on one of those (spread even throughout your workout) each workout will do wonders.

As for upper body strength - your weightlifting will do you good. Don't weightlift 2 days in a row; give your body at least one day inbetween to rest. Also, alternate between 'strength' days - few repetitions with heavy weights - and 'endurance' days - lots of reps with light weights. Try this for a weightlifting schedule:
Week 1
Sun: Rest
Mon: Strength
Tue: Rest
Wed: Endurace
Thur: Rest
Fri: Strength
Sat: Rest

Week 2
Sun: Endurance
Mon: Rest
Tue: Strength
Wed: Rest
Thur: Endurance
Fri: Rest
Sat: Strength

^^ Alternate between the two for a well-balanced workout. Determine for yourself what ammount of reps and what weights to use.

The 2 miles a will be great for your legs and cardio, but if you think you can handle it (or think so at some later date) try increasing the distance in 1/2 mile increments. If you are using a treadmill, try giving yourself an incline.

One last tip I have for you is to eat a lot of fruits and veggtables; the fresh and raw ones are best. They will provide essential nutrients and just improve your health overall.

Good luck!

Do anything, but just do it repeatedly and consistently. That will most likely give you the best results, tone first, then bulk, if that's your choice.

Make sure you take a day off from lifting weights because when you lift weights, you actually tear the muscle. So it's good to lift weights every other day. Also, lifting weights is the fastest way to LOSE weight.

I wouldn't go all the way to 4 miles - try three. Trust me - I used to run cross country (till I hurt my hip & knee in a fall) and the difference of 1 mile is HUGE.

Also drink _LOTS_ of water when running. H2O is essential.

Yeah I usually drink about 12 oz of water before I start. Mainly because I sweat a lot. The gym also has a lot of water fountains so I make a lot of runs for those also.

jim, i'm wondering here..

are you looking to improve your physical ability, or your size?
• AmbassadorAmbassador Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13942Members
If you're looking to gain strength, do about 8-10 reps of a heavier weight; if you're looking for definition, do 10-15 reps of a lighter weight. If you're looking to sculpt your chest, I would suggest doing the incline, decline, and flat bench presses. That way the entirety of your chest will be worked instead of just a portion of it.

Also, when doing the chest exercises, you must work your outer and inner chest so it won't look funny. For inner chest, do a bench press but with a closer grip. Close grip = inner chest where as wide grip = outer chest.

To get rid of your pot belly, I would suggest running and eating right. I common misconception is that if you do 500+ situps a day, then your fat will go away. This is a lie, you naturally have a 6-pack from the day you're born but it's the fat that covers it up. So to get rid of it, I would suggest eating right and running. Sweat away that fat.

A good idea is to drink a glass of milk before working out so that your amino acids will get a little jolt and you'll build muscle better. Another thing would be to drink a protein shake afterward so that your muscles do not 'eat themselves' away.

And also a common misconception, that degamer kindly said, is that if you don't work out it will go away. That's completely falst. You might lose some muscle definition and such but you should be as strong as you were before.

If you want some good exercises for upper body just tell me, that's pretty much what I've been doing for the past 3 years.

Just remember to have a day of rest and to work everything evenly. Nothing funnier to see than a guy with huge biceps and the smallest shoulders, back muscles, etc.

If you are really looking for slimming down and getting in good shape i would suggest joining a sports team for your school. Coaches know exactly how to get your body in peak physical condition and know how much you can be worked. If you don't want to make that kind of commitment i would suggest the following things. Run four miles EVERY day. Don't go out now and try to do it. Jog lightly and build yourself up to four miles. Keep continuing the distance and pressure. For building your upper body i would suggest working out your upper body EVERY OTHER DAY. Its easy to screw up your body if you bench every single day and overwork your muscles. Calisthenics - pushups, situps, squats etc. are also something you should get into. On what to eat just use common sense. Stay away from sweets, sodas, and greese. Eat eggs <<<< pure protein which is very good for putting on muscle every morning. You can hard boil a bunch one day and leave them in the refrigerator. And finally. DON"T SLACK OFF. If you really want to get in shape you have to commit yourself completely.

I hope this will help you. Ultimately i suggest joining a sports team. I joined crew and am now in the best shape of my life.

Just gotta watch what sports team you join. I live in a huge football town and the coaches could care less how you look or how much you can do. They will always push you harder and only want you to gain strength. If anything I'd say join a cross country team or something, you get the miles in and you learn what to eat/what not to eat.

Im still in school so i see no reason to join the marine corps at the moment.... Joining football wouldn't seem like the greatest idea either if you are a big guy wanting to lose weight not gain it.

Yeah I don't want to join a sports team. I have been doing this pretty consecutively for the past 2 months and I am definately seeing a lot of improvement, just not as much as I wanted to see. Thanks for all your suggestions, I will try a new workout schedule with new health foods. I do have a bowl of cereal before I go workout(but usually I wait a couple hours for the food to digest or else I taste it when I go running).

Edit: How should I go about making a protein shake? What ingredients do I need? Where do I procure such ingredients? etc.

Thanks.

If your going to run allot, stop drinking carbonated beverages like soda, root beer, sprite, and beer etc...They can give you horrible cramps. I used to have this problem when I ran cross country and when I stopped drinking them (during the season only, I like my coke from time to time) I saw a dramatic drop in cramps. Plus those things are horrible for your body.

But you sound serious about this so I'm sure you already stopped drinking those.

I personally run 4-5 miles every weekday and do 50-100 pushups/situps every night (mostly ) and I seem to be in good shape.

Well, the easiest thing to do would be to head over to your local GNC or health store and purchase a protien supplement. Alot of people mix the powder with water, but the best method is to use milk and mix that with a chocalate flavored protien. That way you'll be getting not only the protien from the powder, but from the milk as well.

You might also want to look into purchasing a Glutamine supplement to help keep your muscles from eating themselves after a workout.

As far as your routine goes, pick one part of your body to work out daily. Personally i do, biceps, chest, triceps, shoulders, back, and then legs. Thats a total 6 day routine with one day off. Just remember, if your looking to put on alot of muscle the only way to really do it is with iron. That means bench press, military press, and dumbells. Keep the cable workouts to a minimum unless working out the smaller muscle areas.

Oh, and lastly, if your goal is putting on muscle, dont go doing too much cardio... Its very hard to bulk up your muscle and burn fat at the same time.

I've been working out for a while now so if you have any questions, feel free to ask
