My Foray Into Skinning.

ok i've tried to get into skinning a few times in the past, but i've always got lazy/bored/distracted so i'm trying to make a decent attempt. I'm doing it on the Colt 1911 that is keeping an active thread in the main custom forum, mainly because the mesh makes sense to me, and its a weapon i'm relatively familiar with. its versatile for different styles, stylish, but not overcomplicated.

anyway.

here's what i've got so far. I'm switching between all sorts of tutorials, some work well, some don't. early days, i know, but here it is.

i'd appreciate any comments, suggestions etc. I've made a few attempts at the slide, but i can't seem to get it to work right. I'm finding that i just don't have a steady enough hand to hand-draw highlights & shadows, any suggestions of a way around this?

You shouldn't need to steady of a hand to draw the slide. I don't want to sound patronizing...but do u know about holding shift in PS to draw straight lines? I can't see why you would draw anything else but straight lines on the slide, that's basically all it needs.

The two barrels looks very good...

yeah, lol, remembered that a few seconds after posting (doh)

    update...

the grooves on the slide have me totally screwed as to how to do them. theres like 3 pixels to work with on each one. hulp D:

    update.

tweaked contrast to make it a bit more metal-y. got the shadowing on the slide to a tolerable quality... finally. also shifted the highlights/shadows on the grooves and nerfed em a bit. doesn't look *too* bad on the model now.

Grooves aren't that hard...just don't worry about detail.

Just make sure u set the dodge/burn tool (Depending on which side of the groove u are doing) to a high %age and then dodge/burn once on the right side. Usually, the mesh is stretched over grooves anyway and the texture only gets stretched into a blur so detail there isn't hugely needed...especially not on the colt...the grooves are so small.

A dodge on the left hand side and burn on the right should do it really.
