Woah. Alright, that's it. I'm moving to the US.

    "Oh, for your acting?"
    "..Uh... Yeah.."

    *moves to the US and forgets all about his acting career*

    Hosting whatever server you want for 50 bucks a month FTW.

    Wow you would think a lot more people would be interested in this. PEOPLE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 30 MBPS UP AND DOWN FOR PROBABLY 60-70 DOLLARS A MONTH!

    And when It gets to Denver (Verizon is only a wireless provider here) then I'll be jumping up and down, no sooner.

    Philadelphia suburbs here. I can't wait.

    Verizon is replacing the local (copper) loops with fiber. This will result in much less cost to them in the long run and much better service to customers.

    Win-Win

    Probably much more than that. The entry level 5 down and 3 up is $30.
    Verizon price schedules increase exponentially for increased bandwidth.

    I bit the bullet when I ran a business DSL line into my home. Fiber makes me giddy.

    Not that much more, Wizard. 15 Mbps is going to cost only $50 a month alone. I'd say 30 Mbps will probably cost around $80 a month. That is, until Cable internet turns their bandwidth way up and then the price wars start.

    The link I posted on the first page is a link to my dad's new firm; they've got a wireless internet antennae that has a range of 2 miles. They're calling it "the I-Zone," instead of wi-fi.

    This is going to be a huge boon for the online gaming community. Everybody and their mother will be able to host a low ping server w/o having to start a company to do it.

    This is terrible news for some of the hosting companies. Theya re going to have to find a gimmick/feature that lets them compete with the oncoming flood of low cost upstarts.

    Anyone have any thoughts along this vein?

    :S

    The light travels slightly slower due to the density of the fibre (really that much slower? :o) but the fact that you can have many light beams in the fibre at once more than makes up for it. It also needs boosting far less, and cannot be tapped into easily. (More useful for phone lines. Who cares if someone intercepts my online gaming packets?)

    --

    Geminosity, with routers on 100% of the time, the Ip would never be released. Weeee free servers. Still, if the router ever did crash, (power failure and whatnot,) you would somehow have to get the new ip to all your regulars...

    So yeah, static IP is an issue.
    --

    I'm a bit confused as to what the fuss is about actually. There's been fibreoptic infrastructure all over london (and other major cities in the UK,) for at least a year now. This includes phone lines, and, thus, broadband connections.

    And this still all hinges on millions of miles of cable being laid. :\
    GG Thatcher for laying copper all over Britain when Fibreoptics were presented as an alternate faster option. Ruddy conservatives.

    I actually heard about this I think two years ago. Back then they said it would take 15 years to complete the replacement plan.

    About fiber, its harder to break into without someone noticing (near impossible unless you have some really good equipment) but can be done... I wonder what v will do to restrict access so no one mooches.

    Yeah, FDDI is pretty secure, however its also quite easy to hijack (my cisco instructor was devious, and felt it was important we know the exploits hackers/moochers/whoever use)

    well blue, unlike in america we don't really have many services that offer static IP in the UK. You probably don't notice it if you're on Blueyonder but you essentially have a '24 IP lease' that changes every 24 hours. Note that when the lease runs out you've actually got a pretty good chance of being handed exactly the same IP so it's almost static but it's not guaranteed static... at least not by my very very limited understanding of all this funny stuff anyways ^^;

    That's horrible. One of the first things I did upon graduation was drop the little extra dough on a static IP.

    30 megabits? My cable line does 5 megaBYTES.

    Besides, why does it matter? Everything has throttled bandwidth now. I can be on the fastest connection on earth and still see only about 150-200 kb/s downloads from most places.

    Do we really need 30mbs a second?

    No, im happy with my 10mb down 1.5mb up cable conn.

    only 45 bucks a month US.

    MegaBITS, MegaBITS!

    Megabits and megabytes are totally different. A single megabyte is equal to eight megabits.

    Steam measures download times in megabits. This tricks you into thinking it's faster then it actually is.

    30 megabits is only 3.75 megabytes. Colorado's cable lines from Comcast are 3 megabytes, or 24 megabits. They're upgrading to 5 megabytes very soon, which is equal to 40 megabits.

    Isn't it great how they fool you like that?

    Remember, it's like cooking:

    A 't' = 'teaspoon', and a 'T' = 'Tablespoon'. It takes 3t to make 1T.

    A 'b' = 'bit', and a 'B' = 'byte'. It takes 8b to make 1B.

    Mbps = Megabits per second.

    MBps = Megabytes per second.

    If you think you have an ****-kicken' connection, you might want to double check. Chances are, your hotshit connection is fluff.

    I understand what Mb and MB is dude, I am a comp sci major so you don't need to inform me. AFAIK cable is SHARED and therefore the only way you would acheive bandwith like that is if you have no one else using the connection. Therefore what I am talking about is very secksy, ESPIECIALLY SINCE I ONLY GET 1.5 Mbps down and 128 Kbps UP.

    Oh yeah and 8 bits != ALWAYS equal 1 byte(sorry to break your bubble), but in this situation it does.

    "DOOD 8 BITS != A BYTE!!!!" - Well it does in this case, and I'm explaining the difference between a MEGABIT and a MEGABYTE. It's a HUGE freaking DIFFERENCE. I'm not giving a god damn course on file sizes you tard. Why the **** did you even bother to put this in? So you can sound smarter? Considering you made a post specifically to flame someone and PRETEND they're talking to you, I can't imagine you're playing with a full deck ANYWAY.
