IMO, It would be nice to have a weekly, or even bi-weekly update one the main page. When there are no news updates for a long time, people assume that nothing is going on.

That's all very nice and well for the people in the community. Having to spend a couple of month on a beta version only to recieve nothing but bug fixes and then wait for balance changes so desparately needed ( the NSI top-tier finals had 5 marine wins out of 5 ), isn't doing any good to the community or the amount of people playing either.
And this would be all fine and well if we could just bookmark the Mantis and see the bugs we played with since 1.0, but that's not really updates. Is it too much to ask for to have more news updates? Zunni is the latest PR guy, and an update on the front page or the forum every few days about what the dev team is doing or fixing right now will go a long way to helping NS.
Beta 4a was released about 4 months ago. Since then there were 3 updates on the front page, none of which had anything interesting to say about the beta.
It's easy to see why people would get the impressions that no one is doing anything.
at ns.org pages there will be no news, but we post every week news about ns. and i dont mean nap news about ns. but the news are in german www.ns-game.de
I don't really mind aswell, but you've gotta admit, it does look ike the devs are doing nothing.
Beta 5 is going to be much better than what we were going to release before.
If you're going to do something, do it right. And that's what we're trying to do. By the way... Bast plays much better now, according to our PTs
Be patient, I'm sure Zunni has something planned ^^
I dont know, maybe it's down ATM, try again a bit later. It's nothing exciting to look at anywho, just a list of bugs, most of which has some relation to ns_hera (maybe the buggiest map of all time?).
Thanks to all the playtesters, who took the time to answer in this thread, it's always good to hear news, besides checking Mantis a couple of times a day. I still enjoy beta 4a, and like the rest wait for beta 5.
To those who can't wait any longer, go do something else, play another game, and come back here, when beta 5 is out, until then, give these hardworking guys a chance to do what they do very good... Improve the game for all of us
Beta 5 is only really bug fixes, so when it is here, it's gonna be pretty disapointing. I think people are looking for a beta which is really going to change the way we play NS. For exmaple the beta that the BUS is going to be released in, as if stands now, DMS and PG's seem to be the only thing that's seeing light in NS play, clan scene and pub!
And beta 5 isn't going to bring this, i think the only gameplay change is something to do with combat, which the devs wont say what it is, for whatever reason i don't know. (it'll probably soe lam0 spawn system...)

Allow me to jump in here.....
A few things that need to be understood..
1) I can't change the main page at the moment, and since we are looking at moving to a new webpage (with new cool features) shortly it doesn't make much sense to alter my access to allow me to do this.
2) The front page is NOT just for the community.. Therefore unless I have something of extreme importance such as: B5 will be released on date X, I will not post my announcements there, they really only mean a significant amount to people already vested in the game AKA "you".
3) I have written 2 announcements in the past week (on the forums where the community hangs out) with another I am just finishing now. I strive to include information in every one that the public isn't already aware of, regardless if it's changelog data, or even just what's happening with the team (information about our meeting etc)
4) This is my personal feeling so keep this in mind: But I WILL NOT release a release date unless I feel 100% comfortable that we will make that date (such as the build has been PT'd and no bugs have been found, there has been a feature freeze and I've got word from the devs that things are going smoothly) and why won't I? I've worked in the computer software industry for 10 years now.. I've seen release dates come and release dates go. And while it's nice for system admins to be able to try to plan around those dates, they end up not meaning very much.
Trust me when I say, work is continuing, and that I understand how frustrating it is to not have all the details right now.. But I'm working to address this with new announcements, with new information and I'm always available to handle any questions that come up (PM me).

I'm puzzled, I thought it was a public beta, when did this change?
LOL! I read eggmac's post, then I pressed the "reply" button and scrolled down to see the beautiful, white NUKED. If you want me to, I could repost it, at the expense of my forum account.
(Epedemic: pre-release builds that are likely to cause huge bugs are given to the Playtesting crew. The public beta side of it is for balance and obscure, hard to find bugs).

NS is being worked on, it just doesn't seem like it. Much kudos for the team and some playtesters for descending upon this thread and quashing rumours. I waited for 2.0 during the 1.04 era, and anyone can tell you it was a loong but satisfying wait. patients is a virtue, but impatients isn't a vice...
I could really care less to when the next patch comes out, it could come out a month from now. WHAT I am mad about is the lack of updates on the main page. You would think the developers would give us weekly updates on the site as to keep the people informed and excited about the next patch. It would show the community that this build is actively being worked on.
Honestly, does it really take that much time to do one news post a week?
I'm not as concerned with main page updates as smaller, more frequent updates for community sites. Right now, community sites really have almost nothing to work with, and I hope Zunni is taking measures to correct this. It's no surprise that sites such as ReadyRoom (<3) fall into disrepair when there is nothing to post. You can't rely on "Map of the week"s and other little gimmicks for several months straight.

Ok, so you don't like 4a (I do, I still play on lunixmonster), so go play something else

If you plan to eliminate every bug before release, then there never will be another release. LOL!
Hopefully a release will be upon us soon.
If Valve invested in it, Charlie hasn't told me yet.
