<div class="IPBDescription">www.ns.org killed SaltzBad with Knife</div> We've all had it happen to us. You can't scrim or pug because something came in your way of being around at peak time, or when you had 6 people noone else did. And you really, really can't be bothered to pub it up in another low-quality 2 AM egostroking game. So, you stray - maybe just to other mods, maybe to UT2K4, maybe you're a sick bastard that plays Doom3 MP, maybe you play MMOGs like PlanetSide, Eve, JumpGate ( <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) or what have you. Anything you play casually alongside.
So, while you're doing that - why not help get NS that extra population/clanscene it so desperately needs? Its easy to do too - <b>just change your name to www.natural-selection.org (on servers with advertising allowed), or NSPlayer on servers that don't allow advertising.</b> Sooner or later a few curious minds will inquire as to your name, and what exactly Natural-Selection is.
Sure, you might not exactly attract a great many people on your own like that - but it costs practically no effort, gets NS free PR. So hey, why not?

What I did was playing CS (which I so horrible suckade at) and I change my name to:
"Natural Selection = better HL mod"
(And uhm, I was bitching at the recoil/crappy weapons, and the pure repetive gameplay)
But I will do this <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

CS is repetative?
DMS, Fade?
Pg rush?
NS on the other hand, while its in itself not a terribly complex game yet, forces players to create the playing field and basicly find their own means to the only thing set in stone : To kill the oppositions ability to spawn. Thats why, as well as ~15-30 minute rounds (opposed to 3 minute rounds) NS feels alot less repetitive.
But anyway, bit off topic. No need to go all "Our mod is better than yours" on people, just let them find out for themselves or tell them why you love NS <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I use the name "www.natural-selection.org" in CS games. People talk to me about it and I think I have recruited 10 people so far =)
The problem with NS is it's first time user friendliness. The ABSOLUTE BEST WAY to experience NS is by yourself looking finding mods from somewhere or from a friend a while ago. If your rushed to play NS, and you install everything, it will be a worse experience since you won't take time to understand all the different things NS has to offer. Patience allows the player to adjust gradually...
It shocks me when people say I used to play that, but it's rigged... CS has made people think "if I play this twice I'll become pro OMG OMG!!one1!". It's sad really since NS is a game that takes time.
I tried doing the "hey fellow CSer, want some free h4x and pr0n? come to my site we g0tz jor back <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->" line, but that resulted in some kicks... well 70,000 vs 1,000, it's pretty damn hard to persuade, I'll tell you that.
According to the Steam Chart. It's probably 2,000 or so <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Greatly higher counts between West coast prime time and European prime time. Much love for the aussies, but there aren't as many of them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Some games have rather inappropriate timescales and font rendering for much publicity however - most obviously, truncating names in the scoreboard !

true but I only needed the beginning slideshow and an idea of what was happening. CS really may be a pox on the gaming community but only because it seems people are morons
I half agree
As far as the combat aspects of the game such as biting and shooting i believe NS is easier to adjust to/learn than games like counterstrike.
1. the guns don't have recoil and are simple compared to other mods.
2.The aliens are all melee and simply require moving towards your opponent, touching or nearly touching him, and clicking
As far as structure roles and abilities i can see where that may take time but it couldn't take any more time than learning the roles and physics of various stupid guns in CS. IMO at least...
It may sound strange but the time it took me to learn and play NS decently was many times shorter than CS. But that could be that i was already familiar with the engines keys and phsyics and things from CS...and i knew how to move my mouse at something like a pack of giant rhino thingies spamming "Oh Noes Heqwew We Cooomeh". and Waypoitns and minimap = quick map learn...or make it playable if not learned
Actually...looking back at what i just wrote above i disagree with most of what i just wrote and apologize for wasting your time =D
Edit: Grammar also bad...im tired...and i thought i'd also just add that i picked up my Bio textbook and loked at the table of contents and jumped at the title Sensory and Motor Mechanisms...immediatly thinking i saw sensory and movement chambers written...sleep =[
and I've been doing so for a couple of months
glad u disagree with your own words :]
recently switched from CS and:
i constatntly forget about low backspeed
i keep trying to buy ammo when i respawn
i get killed before i can even spot the enemy
etc etc...
the idea of NS is waaay different than the one i used to while playing CS and even as i spend lots of time browsing this forum, reading manuals and stuff i must say it's very hard to make theory work in action. my aim is not bad, as i played CS for 2 yrs but still when i see fade flying like a rocket at my face i simply tend to panic <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->
it's a pity but statement that CS community sucks in general is true <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> perhaps it's too popular to avoid n00bs or 'big pr0s' :sigh: at every step u make. although i play on one server mostly with ppl i like, as an @ i have so much work to swipe off the ones that try to ruin our fun that sometimes i spend hours ingame but can't play single map without being disturbed with geting rid of teamkillers, cheaters, flamers... you name it... i mean there's so much of them that it really discourages me from starting the game the other day 8-/
i play NS too short to state that it's any better than what i said above, but so far i didn't see ANY of it on NS servers/forums. i'm hell of a newbie, but even when i bite to death my 4 teammates in a row just to learn that ff is on Oo i wasn't kicked/flamed/tortured by teammates. instead just said 'sorry', heard 'ok' and played on. well, try to imagine that happening on CS server... if i wasn't banned i would disconnect myself after learning how much my team 'likes' me.
that was quite offtop, so back 2 the business...
although i saw this thread a minute ago i actually did what it's founder proposed a couple of times and figured out that when CS folks ask 'what the heck is NS?' and i answer sth like this: <b>'marines try to kill wall-walking aliens"</b> they tend to reply <b>'oh.. so it's just not 4 me'</b>. i know that NS is more than that, but how else can you describe it in one short line??
maybe sth like <b>'cool blend of action and strategy' </b>would sound more intriguing 2 them? well, i don't feel competent PR'ing NS as i haven't even mastered 'combat' mode ;]
peace!
You'll get used to NS, just give it some time <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I would describe it as "An intense battle between aliens and marines", but that's just me <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Also, break the habits of burst firing and crouching for accuracy, they don't help you any. And remember that jumping as a marine doesn't incur nearly as bad a penalty as jumping in CS. As much as people will complain about 'crack jumping marines' when an alien gets in your face a well executed jump can save your life. But don't spam jump like mad, or you won't be able to hold your target.
Look for NSGuides in game (the guys with the purple icons) and feel free to ask them any questions you have, that's what they're around for. You might also check out nslearn.org, they have a lot of articles up ranging from beginner to more advanced tactics. They also hold training sessions from time to time. And welcome to NS. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
In cs you can be a total nub, shoot in the legs and recoil will give you a head shot if your lucky, ns is not influenced by luck as much.
I just never ever play cs since I tried ns, I rather play classic doom or ut than cs.

I actually used higher sens in cs...
a) LONG GAMES
b) NO COMBAT
c) LONG GAMES
d) NO COMBAT
This may increase the amount of players, or decrease it. People hate the NS Classic gametype because you start slow, and the games last <i>longer</i>. If the games would last longer and continue on and on, NS would be a great mod. Instead, it's turned into an all-out nub warfare.
<!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo-->
can't agree on this one.
CS itself is great game! but.. there's some other stuff about it that's annoying :/ if it sucked it simply wouldn't atract such a crowd, and sadly - it's that crowd that sucks mostly. but it's not like u said "every noob can easily win". it's more like there are dozens of n00bs ready to meet you on CS servers/forums everyday.. 15-years-old admins that kick u simply coz u owned them two times in a row being 'the best' among them all Oo
and lucky kills? they happen everywhere - me+NS is the best example, as i don't get any other (just you wait, girlz <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->) CS is about reflex AND thinking. u can stay alone and trick those 4 remaining - sneak behind, flash them, mark climb on a ladder and attack from a ground, anything.. provided that u think, and u do it fast, instead of running kamikaze-style. sorry but IMO the second scenario is more adequate to Combat NS as i often find myself shouting at marines to squad up, just 2 see them keep rushing alone right after respawn and getting killed. 'sharing' experience is one of the sweetest things in NS but it makes my rambo-team even more annoying <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> i also find resp kills quite boring as they're pretty common when enemy is sieging your base. so.. i'm aware (and u should b too) that even NS got it's "pros and cons"... still i should feel lucky that i get pros mostly... well, at least by now ;]
and again back on topic - today, after 10 bans in 10 minutes i changed my nick from 'NS rox' to 'CS sux' and i swear i don't grant them 4 nothing...

yes and no. combat is good for guys like me to test things out not ruining other's game at the same time. but its damn right that changing the game simply 2 attract more audience is a cheap trick, and it's more about money, than quality. correct me if i'm wrong, but i hardly believe that before beta 5 this community suffered stagnation.
hmm.. ok, but i know some stories that started like the one we discuss here and the long term effect was whole way worse than before even touching it.. i'll just say it's a metter of days to set back the password 4 registered only on our CS server, and i've seen nice forums 'evolving' <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> into nice trashcans.
i say that instead of wandering native servers using strange nicknames we should recommend NS 2 ppl we actually know and would like to meet ingame.
go 4 quality, not quantity...
btw: today i got myself a nice nick - "1st time trying Classic " and started playing it. of course with such an advertising i was the last one to get upgrades/help, but i was also flamed by commie 4 i don't accuire waypoints... on a map that i have never seen b4, some kind of a labirynth. later on he ordered me 2 build, i asked how, in reply i read "us ur brain for f**ks sake" <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> i stayed, just ignored his futrther orders and from then on it was fun to explore <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
They're just different games, and I wouldn't suggest one is better than the other. Depends on what I feel like, getting in depth, or running around with a Mac10 using the spray 'n' pray method.
EDIT: Forgot what I was gonna say originally, yeh I think that advertising scheme is an excellent idea. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I really envy you for that...is has been some time when NS scared me the last time.
I miss that beginners thrill!
