Ns And The Fps Problem

I own a 9800se 256bit from powercolor and i got really BIG problems with fps in NS.
You might think "nothing new..." but my problem is far more complicated.

As i play NS everything seems to be OK at start, 80-100fps map depandable.
But if i run around the map few seconds the fps drops dramatically to 60 or even 40.
Untill now nothing new.
Here comes my *special* problem. Once the fps drops a certain value (about 10fps) it never recovers again untill i rejoin the server or press esc/console.
So for example i got 100, when the fps drops to 80 it will not recover to 100 again.

After a minute i got avarage 10-20 fps and they stay at 10-20 even if i go into the ready room (in which i always get 100fps after connecting).

I tryed everything i could find here suggested and it still won't get better. So what could it be? Why does it lock at lower fps? And why do i get 100fps if i press esc/console, what is blended out after doing it so i reach 100 again?

By the way, i played aquanox2 on highest details AA/AF and it ran really smooth, so my card can't be broken.

    I know its pretty nub - but you do have the latest catalyst drivers right? If not, it cant hurt to grab a hold of em.

    Oh my god, of course i tryed the latest catalyst <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    I tryed 4.8 and the 4.9 beta doom fix, i thought doom3=opengl ... Hmm why not.
    But it did not work, so i tryed some other drivers which were actually made for half life, but were a bit outdated.
    I am going to try out some omega drivers, i couldn't do it earlier, the site was down.

    Post some things i can try to solve this problem please. And i really want to know what exacty is blended out when you press esc or console.

    Hmm, you could try setting ati_npatch and ati_subdiv to zero in the console. It fixed a (minor) fps problem in CS for me, so it might help you.

    Try the above suggestion. Setting both values to 0 made an infinite amount of difference for me.

    They were set <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    I really don't know whats happening, it decrases the max fps untill its unplayable...

    sounds like a memory leak :X although i dunno what would cause it.

    Whether you use the Omega drivers or not, I recommend checking the mobo BIOS adjustments that he has posted. My fps increased slightly (I'm using the drivers also) but it also seemed to keep the drops from being so dramatic.

    It happens only in half life (which includes NS <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )...
    I tryed an omega driver few minutes ago, same result. I'll keep trying.

    Hmm what do you mean with "memory leak"?
    To me it looks like my 9800se is loading the textures and stuff and just stores it, without unloading... I think this is what could be. But on the other side, when i press esc, i get 100 fps, when press esc again the 10-20 fps are back again.

    By the way, i noticed that i have kinda 2 cards displayed...
    Is this normal?

    hmm. that is confusing, if it only happens in HL. try looking at the HalfLife thread in the rage3d.com forums. And yes, it's normal to show two devices (the second one is for a dual monitor, iirc).

    When Wheeee said memory leak he meant that you have something running on your computer that just takes up more and more and more RAM as it goes on. Eventually enough RAM will be eaten up that it starts to really kill your computers performance. I'm pretty sure the custom icons used in NSArmslab.com's servers cause this but very very little.

    I tryed my luck on co_core which has no extreme use of lightning and big rooms. My result was quite good, 100fps all the time. I usually lose the most performance in rooms with MANNY lights and big complicated rooms like double res places.

    And those rage3d.com forums were not the big hit, they just dream about hl2 over there <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    While we are talking about framerates, how can I get my FPS in-game to get up to around 100?

    Try turning Fast Write and AGP Write off. Fast write is easy enough, just go to the SMARTGART tab in your driver settings. AGP Write requires searching your hard drive for "smartgart" and clicking one of the shortcuts it finds.

    Can someone shed some light on what those above commands do?
    (ati_npatch and ati_subdiv)

    My ati_npatch was set to 1
    and my ati_subdiv was set to 2.0.

    My Natural-Selection is running fine at the moment so
    I won't edit them just yet. Not until I know what they do anyway.

    All i needed was a fresh clean NS installation.
    I delited my nsp folder and installed ns again, that was all Oo
    100fps all the time, and if i drop some fps (comm) they get back at 100, yay <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
