<div class="IPBDescription">And I need a computer.</div> Well, you probably didnt notice I was gone since I'm not very active on these forums.. Anyways, I've moved 1060km up north to start university studies <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

For anyone who's interested: <a href='http://www.gscept.com' target='_blank'>www.gscept.com</a> (I'm in Games Programming)

And now I'm looking for suggestions on what computer to buy. Fast, as I intend to order it within the next hours..

I have a bit more than $1500 to spend.. but I think I'll buy just the important stuff, and the rest later.. like, headset now, speakers later.. gotta buy food and pay the bills too ya know <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Some things I'd like to know is good and bad things about 64bit processors.. will I run into problems if I get one? Better to go with 32bit? AMD or Intel? (Probably going for AMD)

And any other tips and suggestions you have. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I might update this post or write a reply later with further questions.

You pay exorbidantly more for 64 bit CPU's but they are acctually faster, and they potentially have massive benifits in the future...

Definately go for AMD, they are a struggleing company compared to intel (not like you care though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->) and they have consitantly proven in the benchmarks that you get alot more bang for your buck out of an AMD chip.

Whatever <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> but will I have any problems with older programs and stuff? Or is that just something I made up?

Also, does graphics card manufacturer make a big difference? Cause the only X800Pro 256Mb I could find is from Connect3D..

Any tips on RAM? I'm looking at Corsair TWINX1024-blahblah 2x512Mb PC3200 but it's a little expensive. Will most likely have to change since I'm already over my $ limit <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'll post my current setup later so you can stop me before I do anything stupid. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    edit:
Oh and is there any big difference between WinXP HOME and PRO except for the price?

Ath 64's work compleatly normally with 32 bit programs, with the expeption of some poorly made hardware drivers *coughaudigycough* they are compleatly reliable.

For ATI design manufacturers I can only really recommend Saphire, Built by ATI, and MSI (which builds cards better than up to specs, they easily overclock with no real risk) I can't tell you that Connect3D is a bad manufacturer, but those three manufacturers are the only one's I have heard good things about to date (which isn't saying a huge lot, I haven't been following vid cards and what not for very long).

Corsair ram is a great buy, but not really nessicary, you just minimize your chance of any type of memory failure with corsair.

Win XP home is all your average gamer will ever need. XP pro is much more suited to semi advanced developing and reasonably advanced networking purpouses. XP pro has better Microsoft.Net (the software line, Duh) support and a few built in developer tools. But if you aren't planning to get hardcore into C++ (by which I mean several years of programing oriented collage education at least) or put together high level networks (ussually home networks run easily on XP home) I can't really recommend XP Pro over XP Home. Once again I would wait for a second opinion before finalizing though...

I'd personally think that getting a 64 bit now is kind of a waste because there are no 64 bit programs out no and their won't be for a while. Also, 64 bit barely improves on 32 bit programs. I would just go get an Athlon XP Mobile 3000 because mobile is the only chip that is still overclockable and save the money for a cpu cooler and/or a video card cooler if you plan on overclocking it.

This is what I got so far..

case - Chieftec Dragon Super MidiTower

motherboard - Abit NF7-S2G nForce2 Ultra 400 -blahblah- (with lan and audio)

cpu - AMD Athlon XP3200+ (the only one available.. I'll check with other sites later.)

    RAM - Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PRO 2x512Mb DDR PC3200 CAS2 400Mhz
    *changed to Kingston 2x512Mb PC3200 400MHz

    hdd - Seagate Barracuda 160Gb 7200rpm SATA

    dvd - ASUS DVD 16x/48x

    graphics card - Connect3D Radeon X800Pro 256Mb DDR TV-out DVI
    *will buy next month

    monitor - Samtron 78E 17"

and some cheap mouse + keyboard..

I still need to get the price down some.. thinking about maybe skipping the graphics card and buying it next month when I got more cash. Or lowering the RAM to just 512Mb and getting another 512 next month..

See anything bad? Any more tips? This is the first time I put together a computer, so.. I want to be careful <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    -----

Changed to cheaper RAM, Kingston 2x512Mb PC3200 400MHz and decided to buy the graphics card later.. does this all look good? I'm kinda in a hurry..

Can only stay here for another hour max. Anyone feeling helpful? Don't want to do anything I'll regret, especially if it costs alot of money <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If you want to be able to play HL2 on full setting with AF and AA then go with the x800
If you dont need the extra power you might want to think about a 9800xt or something, save about $100 or something.

Well yeah hl2 is the main reason I want a good graphics card <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> will order it next month instead though..
I'll start preparing to order now and will wait a little longer if anyone has anything important to say.. If anything goes wrong I'll blame it on you guys! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

btw, I should get a really cheap one until then.. or I wont be able to connect my monitor, right?

    If you get a new comp, get a pwn one. It's worth waiting a month trust me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yet again, Gundam doesn't know what he's talking about on the 32/64-bit front. He's just on this kick for overclocking mobile Athlons... starting to wonder if he's selling the things.

The Ath64 has a far more optimized logic core than the XP series. It runs more efficiently than even the XPs.

Also, if you're going to be shelling out for an X800 Pro, toss in the extra hundred bucks for the XT Platinum Edition instead. MAJOR performance hike, when you're already laying out the money. (Pro is $400 msrp, XTPE is $500. You can order 'em from ATI's website if you can't find a local retailer)

Too late, already ordered. But I don't really need the absolute best there is. This will probably keep me alive until the next upgrade <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Thanks for the info anyway. Will definately get that XT Platinum Edition if I can.
