scared, jump, affected by it ?
I read acouple of threads about people being scared or have screamed while playing Doom-3. At first it is funny but I started to think about something which makes it less funny now.

Most probably, people posting these threads or replying to them and admiting they were scared or screamed are people under 20.

Thinking this, made me also curious about people over 20. How are they experiencing the game while playing it and while not playing it.

I too at the beginning was more jumpy and hesitating to enter rooms or picking up stuffs thinking "yea sure, its a trap !". I even replied to one of those threads. But that's not the case anymore. I'm now on Delta labs. Sure I'm a bit cautious, jumpy (surprised attacked when doors opened) or even adventurous (like full frontal attack with a chainsaw just for fun).

I got used to it now that I have a more clear idea of what to expect. At first, I didn't know how the game would go, so there were more surprises then.

When I close the game, that's it for me. I don't think about it, don't dream about it and I am not affected by it in anyway. When I go to sleep, I have no problems and I sleep in almost total darkness.

So for all those Doom-3 players over 20, are you affected in anyway by Doom-3 while playing it and while not playing it ?
- do you hesitate alot in-game ?
- are you a bit scared ?
- when the game is closed, are you thinking about the game when alone in low light environments ?
- do you dream about it ?

Saying yes to any doesn't mean in anyway that you are a wimp, **** or mentaly ill. We all react differently in any given situations. That is normal.

So, are you ?

I know I'm not over 20, but 20 year olds do get scared. It's just that it's hard to find them. I can't remember who though....

It's the repetitive 'Hey I'm an imp around the corner!' logic that seems to be all over the game. Replace imp with some sort of demon or zombie (or Lost Souls!)

I mean, I finished up a custom map (Triste Breeding Facility) and they had demons pouring out of everywhere. I was a bit jumpy when Lost Souls popped out of nowehre and attacked me from behind, but that was it, nothing was was scary due to the fact that you know that there's always something around the corner when you've played through Doom 3 :/

I'm 18 and I played Doom3 BECAUSE it was scary, I enjoyed that, I didn't flew ten feet off my chair, but I got scared when creeps jumped on me unexpected.

Doom 3 is linear, has uber graphics & sound, the gameplay is ...old style Doom?

I'm 18 also (screw your 20 year old rule) and I'd only jump every once in a while. But then again, I've jumped a little while playing NS. Clive Barkers Undying is still the scariest game ever I think.

I find doom 3 to be one of the least scary games I have ever played, less scary than tetris and way less scary than allmost any multiplayer game or even the original dooms. Doom 3 is very predictable, I'm not scared of the dark, I've played too many games that just try to startle you with another closet full of monsters opening when you pass by or a sudden noise, that's not scary anymore at all.

MP games have panic, you never quite know what to expect because you're playing real people and there's lots of moments when you're vulnerable and doing some important task that you feel really matters(sneaking up a phase gate, capturing a flag, defusing a bomb ,sneaking in and destroying an IP, capturing a scientist with lots of people on right on your heels...). Doom 1 and 2 had hoards of enemies chasing you and not enough ammo to shoot them all, doom 3 you can lazily walk around and blast them to bits and I don't really feel it matters if I die or not, especially not because you can quick save(a feature I dispise). In tetris it feels like it matters if you lose because you've been working for so long on getting this far and there's no lousy save feature.

Not even close, I still play doom 1 and 2 occasionally, but I think doom 3 outright sucked gameplay wise.

I'm 21, and I did run and gun the whole way and didn't really get scared at all. I think your mindset, skill and the speed you play the game has a lot to do with it. I played the game in "combat mode" rather than "creep around and explore" mode, which I think would be a scarier way to play it.

Hmm, true true ! Doom1/2 had wider/more open spaces, in Doom 3 you just go back a few rooms, grab some extra ammo/health, go foward again and shoot some more creeps...

THE proof that the latest games are just clones with Superb graphics/Sound?

while im not 20, when i found that it doom3 gets pretty predictable-see a dark corner and 90% of the time an imp will be there.

I really dont even use the flashlight anymore, just shooty into the corner with my shotty to see if anythings there.

The statue scared the crap out of me. Even though I completely expected it.

I didn't scream though. Screaming/jumping bothers me so I conditioned myself not to do it.

I've been suprised plenty of times in Doom 3, never screamed, and I jumped a few times, but those where in the begining of the game. After about hour 4, it loses it's appeal and becomes just like every other single player FPS, or actualy every game out there. Throw features, and then add like 10 more levels, add those features in there if you remember about it. I loved how the area changed as monsters would bash in doors and such, but that really only happened in the begining and the end, the middle was like Doom 3 target training. It was cool how every NPC would die before doing anything

Doom 3 is only scary because of the hype. After the first time I wasn't freaked out ever again

Meh, I definately jump alot playing doom 3, but then I play it very meticulously and slowly, with lots of unnessicary settings like increased camera effects when you get hit, and player shadow on. I hate getting hit in that game, expecailly from behind, so my gameplay consists of alot of wheeling around at the slightest sound and what not... This was a pretty good system for the longest time, but as soon as I got to the delta labs and sound started coming out of nowhere... They don't pay me enough for this ****.

I can guarrentee you I have never screamed playing doom 3, and I have never paused the game due to being to freaked out, so if I was jumping (probably a couple times ) it wasn't hard enough the seriously effect my play preformace... Other than thinking about how fun playing the game would be while I'm doing boring things, I really don't think about the game much, I don't really have problems with blending games with reality, although in my younger years I did have dreams about CS after playing all night... Im 18 BTW...
