A Friendly Warning

Email Infiltrated
It turns out my email was hijacked recently to send virus laden attachments. I only found out due to the number of failed or refused send messages.

I've since changed the password on the account and all my forum/email accounts. I'm abandoning the hotmail address in favour of my gmail account.

If any of you have recieved any kind of unsolicited mail from me, DELETE WITHOUT PREJUDICE OR MERCY.

The address is cronoswraith@hotmail.com, if you did open the attachments that may have been sent along with the emails and they caused damage I am truly sorry, but it really clinched when I found a returned mail that arrived as I was busy working while the computer was OFF and considering failure of delivery notices are fairly fast, I'm pretty sure it's someone else hijacking my account rather then a worm.

Still, I'll be running a full system scan, virus AND adware to ensure that the trouble isnt on my end and more towards having the same password for a little bit too long.

Thank you for reading, and apologies in advance if anything untoward has happened to you as a result of my negligence.

    Dude, your account wasn't hijacked.

The absolute most common method of spreading email viruses is for the virus to take every address on someone's contact list (one of your friends) and send an email to every single one of them from a spoofed address of other people on the list.

Ergo, your friend's email was hijacked. Start taking names.

And by hijacked, he means one of your friends has one of these virii and probably doesn't use web based email. So they may or may not even know that they're sending this crap out.

If you get worm-laden spam from somebody you know, don't automatically assume they are the click-happy culpret. A bunch of those worms also spoof the sender, telling Jane that Bob sent it, and Bob that Jane sent it, and Billy still has no idea he's infected.

Yeah its amazing how many people email me saying "OMGZOR YOU GATS T3H VIRUSZ0RZ!!!111oneleven" even when I don't. I try to explain that viruses spoof the sender, they say its not possible, and then I send them an email from their own account and they shut up

Er, I think you definition of "hijacked" email address isn't exactly correct.

Any decent SMTP mail server program will allow you to send emails originating from any arbitary email adress. Don't be surprised if you receive an email from admin@natural-selection.org because any one who knows how to run a mass mailer program would probably know how to spoof an email address.

An account is hijacked when the attacker gains access to your mailbox and is able to read the emails that are stored in your account.

Thats what I thought was happening but the replies thus far have eased my paranoia somewhat.

Thanks for the info, but I'm still ditching the account. At the very least it gave me an excuse to change all my passwords, something thats been 4 years overdue
