Some Questions About The Original Doom

<div class="IPBDescription">Mmmmmmm Doom</div> A few days ago I purchased "Doom - Collectors Edition" from
<a href='http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/productpage.asp?ProductCode=RM01452' target='_blank'>GamePlay</a> and it's quickly become "the game I play when waiting for something to download"
because of its low-requirements, it doesn't mind WinAmp running in the background
and because its strangely fun.

Anyways, all this Doom'ing (I've been playing Doom 3 alot too.) has got me wondering
about whats out there for the original Doom.

Is the source code available? (If so what language is it coded it? C, C++, etc?)
Is there a map editor for download? (If so, whats its called and where can I get it?)
Are there any interesting mods/textures/etc I can download?

Keep your answers <b>legal and warez free</b> please. Thanks.

"deu" is the original level editor and is WAY hard to use to make anything beyond some square gray rooms.

"dehacked" edits constants and animations, youc an make some fun mods with that pretty easily. one of my favorites being removing the reload/**** frames from the double shotgun and upping the ammo reserves on it then playing the game on nightmare with my new ubershotgun.

Feel free to post any interesting mod's,maps, etc for the rest
of the Doom players to try out.

I have an old old cd called "D! Zone 2: For Doom & Doom 2".

It's basically a collection of maps made by various fans (over 900 maps).

Pretty sure that doom, quake 1 and quake 2 have been GPL'd.

    Search google for Slidge.

    Random-map Generation for Doom-ee goodness. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
However, you'll need to use the Run command by going START->Run...

It took be about two hours to set it up, mainly because i didn't know what the hell i was doing, but it DOES work, so dont give up. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I have a completely unrelated question about Doom - to what extent was it inspired by Army of Darkness? I just watched that movie again yesterday, and A) his weapons are a chainsaw and a shotgun, and B) the Doom guy's face and expressions look a lot like Bruce Campbell's...

I know Duke Nukem took stuff more directly from the movie - he says a lot of stuff straight from the flick...

Yes, yes I do. Because 5 years from now we will get news posts like "Budget card faceoff: which runs Doom 3 on Ultra quality the best?"

hehe I have them running on ZDoom

Runs rather nicely. Has some added features like jumping, mouselook, particle effects for rocket launchers....

But then again, all source ports also have the same thing, like Doom Legacy and the likes. But I just play it for mouselook. I'd like to keep it as close as possible to the original, maybe except in the case of MP XD

And yes I still enjoy playing Doom....MP with my lil bro and downing him with a rocket launcher while he wields his measely BFG (yes he sucks at Doom but he insists that he's better than me)

TBH the originals are better than Doom 3 for some reason XD

EDITED : If you're looking for the Source Code, check the thread 'Liberated Games'. They have the DOOM source code IIRC.

Doom 3 doesn't have the swarms of enemies that the other 2 have. That's why.

There are Army of Darkness mods for DOOM as well - although the one I played in particular was for DOOM 2

try to get your hands on good Christmas conversions. There are several good ones and they are rather awesome <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Also, for those of you with DOOM 2, get the custom level Mines of Titan, released July 1995. Filename is mines.wad

It's not too difficult to find online, there are DOOM fansites still up. I'll try to link later. It's a most excellent level.
