Help.
I have a few questions about network firewalls. I know by default when you set up a router for a LAN or Wi-Fi access, the router/netowrk puts up a firewall by default. My one question is this: Is this netowrk firewally reall protecting my computer or should I go and get a third-party firewall? My next question is with hosting. Now my friend set up a dedicated server on his LAN, through his router, so I know that its possible. My question is how would I go about doing this? The reason I ask is becasue I want to host some webspace on my computer but I have a wireless router and the computer that I am going to use for it is connect through a wireless netowrk card.

Okey dokey, yes the firewall's in routers are very good and will protect.

Setting up hosting through a lan is possible. What you must do is set your modem so that the IP address of the host PC is in the DMZ. This means that when someone connects it sends the requests to the host pc, however this leave;'s your pc much more vunerable to attack because the built in firewall cannot protect it.

Incorrect, no (grab ZoneAlarm), forward the neccessary ports from the 'home router' (I hate that term), and if you're connecting through a wireless card you definitely should have a firewall on the machine.

Make sure your ISP allows you to run servers (webservers or gameservers) or you may find it impossible even with everything running properly on your setup, if they block the ports upstream.

Oh also make sure you have wireless encryption on, and set your wireless cards to only connect to routers you have set it to. Otherwise someone could connect to your pc and eat it.

Ok. Firstly, I have Verizon DSL and I live in PA, if that makes a difference. I'm no good at networking so if there is a online guide you can refer me to to set up a server, then that would be great. You may also explain in detail yourself.

Thanks, I've seen one of these screens before, and I know how to get to it, but I just have to find where I wrote down my router username/pass.
