<div class="IPBDescription">as well as harmless ones :P</div> i don't know if some of their calculations are accurate, esp. at higher speeds (just seems to follow newtonian mechanics), but it's still fun to play around with.

<a href='http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/' target='_blank'>clickeh</a>

*edit* no graphics, just a disclaimer. don't yell at me
*edit2* i don't know how to make the earth lose mass, some of the values i entered should make it lose mass...so, who knows. maybe that wasn't implemented. it would also have been nice if they had added notices of incidental radiation levels high enough to instantaneously vaporize you.

    I can't get anything that would severely damage the Earth. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

put big numbers in <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> for rotation, you shouldn't use a high impact angle; for orbit, i think it's just impact energy. I couldn't get it to do much until the energy went above 10^35 joules.

*edit* Btw, just something to reference to, the light from the sun on a hot summer day is on the order of 10^3 joules/m^2 (between 1000 and 2000)

yeah, i dont think it's made for simulating that big of an asteroid, since a collision like that would completely obliterate the earth :\

    That's my goal.

Edit: Yes!! I made a good one. 9.2 on richter scale, radiation causes grass, plywood, clothes to ignite, and third degree burns over the body, and the air blast destroys multi-story buildings. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

for some reason, no matter what type of impact i try to make, major changes always remain as:
"The Earth is not strongly disturbed by the impact and loses negligible mass.
The impact does not make a noticeable change in the Earth's rotation period or the tilt of its axis.
The impact does not shift the Earth's orbit noticeably"

Now, if only we could change the material from one type to several... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Mercalli Scale Intensity at a distance of 7777 km:

    X. Most masonry and frame structures destroyed with their foundations. Some well-built wooden structures and bridges destroyed. Serious damage to dams, dikes, embankments. Large landslides. Water thrown on banks of canals, rivers, lakes, etc. Sand and mud shifted horizontally on beaches and flat land. Rails bent slightly.

XI. As X. Rails bent greatly. Underground pipelines completely out of service.

XII. As X. Damage nearly total. Large rock masses displaced. Lines of sight and level distorted. Objects thrown into the air.

    Ejecta:
    What does this mean?

The ejecta will arrive approximately 2549.1 seconds after the impact.
Your position is beneath the continuous ejecta deposit.
    Average Ejecta Thickness: 627.7 m = 2059.22 ft

    Air Blast:
    What does this mean?

The air blast will arrive at approximately 23566.7 seconds.
