Cfac's computer core

man... i'm spending way more time on this than i probably should, but oh well, here's some shots of 389's computer core, they're really dark, but i haven't put in all the lights yet, so bear with me for now...

any comments/suggestions are welcome as always, if they weren't i wouldn't be posting these pics now, would i

Good looking, but the edges of the room are too square.

I'll have to agree with Monkeyget.
Spice the rooms shape up so it looks as good as the computer in it.

Yummy. The core looks very "Hera-esque". Although it's hard to see the "square walls" you speak of, as this monitor is too dark to properly see the rest of the screenshots.

(And no, I can't turn up the brightness any further. -ed)

looks more like a greek err columns (thx CyonPro).
Add some lights to your texture or cables or soemthing, add soem steam roudn the core, like it's being cooled by something

Doesn't really look too "alive" for a computer, if you know what I mean. I think it needs some flashing lights or more displays or something. I also agree with InterFect0r, it looks more like a column you'd see on the Parthenon than a high-tech computer mainframe. Making it thicker and making the texture more "metally" ought to fix that.

An example of a nifty computer core:

http://cyonpro.ballsun.com/ns/ns_cyontest01.jpg

The blue monitor's glow pulsates faintly. This may be too high-poly for what you're looking to make, but hey, it's just one example.

Yeah I know I'm plugging my own map, so shoot me (*stands up on the firing line*)

ok, i gotta stop being so trigger happy on the F5 button, i'll only post one pic for now, but be assured, there's way more....

added some lights, rounded off a couple of bits here and there, did a bit of retextureing (sp?)...

I like what you have so far, and the way you've changed the look of the computer core, though now instead of a cube feeling, it has a cylinder feeling. You've made the tops looks more curvy but the walls still feel... flat. perhaps, since this is a computer terminal, run some poer cables across the ceiling, also, (assuming the laws of heat and resitance and all that otehr electrical BS apply) It's going to be super cooled (liquid N2?) so you could have some pipes running from a wall to teh core. also, I'm a BIG fan of slanted walls instead of having them meet at 90 degrees with the ceiling and floor, put, say, a 30 degree slop somewhere on it. it will give it a "natural" feeling, hinting at a possible curve in the architecure.

[Edit] the r_speeds seem pretty high for the realatively simple architecture you have going on there... I think it may be those cool little lights you have on the walkways. I dunno.... perhaps making them func_walls will improve the r_speeds? oh.. that was it also, the lighting seems uniform, while this is probgably where the commander station is, I'd make those lights you have on the walkways spot lights, and keep the surround areas darker. what's that entity that adjusts the contrast between light and dark? env_gamma? argh. can't remember. Good work so far thou [/Edit]

I think the reason for the higher-than-normal r_speeds (based on the geometry shown in that pic) are probably due to the see-thru grates. Things like glass and grates use special rendering that will increase the r_speeds when viewed ingame.

Hey, I like this Terawatt! Nice grated walkway Computer looks great too. I don't really care for some of those monitor textures, but that's a personal preference.

This all looks good. I think the lighting may be just a bit too white for my tastes, but other than that I think you've done some nice work here. One thing I think you should add is a door (though I'm sure you already knew that one ).
• Terawatt_99Terawatt_99 Join Date: 2002-02-09 Member: 188Members
ya, there actually is a door, but it's in one of the dark corners that i haven't finished yet, and i've added another one, at the end of the catwalk, where it just goes into the wall, and i've changed a little bit of lighting, added some more details, etc, enjoy

That red lighting makes it much better!
The only thing i dont ike are the white lights, the square ones....but ive never liked them, so it dont matter
Looking good.

The only thing I could think of to make it a touch better would be to add a greenish tinge coming from those lower monitors, add a smidgen of atmosphere.

remember that the engine cuts the surfaces with the overlaying brushes ...probably the comp is cutting in more than 8 parts the ground, there's the ceiling subdivided...and i think that with the last lovely adds, 416 is not a so high r_speeds

Steam! Steam! for cooling purpose! the cfacs's computer cores are known for overheating pretty easily!

don't worry, i'm working on getting the steam, and a few poly reduction methods... i should have more pics by tonight...
