fx'es don't do dx9 - technically i think they're capable, but their performance with PS2.0 instructions is terrible - i remember the benchmarks when the FX line was first released, and it wasn't pretty. AFAIK they backport dx9 instructions to dx8.1 (ps1.4).

Point taken, GFFX was bad, but nVidia made up for it with 6800 SM3.0 sexehness.
shader model 3.0 doesn't give you any advantages other than performance. But performance is a good thing, so I don't see why it's anything to scoff at.
