Because i have no life, frankly, i was reading through this site i found with a load of WH40K (Warhammer 40k) backstory/info. And i found something that just stuck in my mind as incredibly similar to the backstory for the BFRs.
The BFR pilots have to spend a lot of time carrying around that crystal, which eventually becomes infused with a part of their personality. That crystal is then basically put in charge of the balance and fiddly parts of working the BFR, so the pilot could concentrate on getting it into battle, aiming, firing etc...
Well, this is taken from <a href='http://www.criticalhit.co.uk/w40krp/WD126_knights.shtml' target='_blank'>Here</a> which is part of the backstory/story of the human "Knights" which are big walking robots that some planets in the WH40K series use:

So the human knights have to imprint their personality into the chair, and that personality runs the basic functions of the robot, the balance etc... and the last comment about "The personality imprint will always hate that person, even if the noble has got over it." is pretty similar to the quote taken from the planetside backstory:

Also, the eldar (another race in the WH40K thing) Knights store a deceased personality inside a Crystal, which is implanted into the Knight suit that does the same job as the chair in the human ones. So the WH40K thing, which was written ages and ages ago, describes the use of both implanted personality AND crystals in keeping a walking robot balanced and functional.

Anyway. I'm sure i'm out of my league with WH40K knowledge in this place (i've never played the TT game, only the RTS beta, and read that site... so meh). I'm not sure if that "Knight" story/info is official or just fanfiction (i think the site is samples from the various WH40k books/novels that are around), but it was definately written before the new planetside BFR story.

By the way, i'm not really accusing them of stealing anything. The similarities just stuck in my mind. I just wanted to see what other people think of it.

Yes they are official, but that was many years ago now, in the 5mm TT game called Epic (as opposed to the 40-50mm scale of W40K). They were just basically big mechs, but not on the scale of the Titans. They clashed alot with a sub-species of Eldar called the Exodites. As to how they piloted their craft, I don't know. You can pretty much taken whats read as being the truth.
I suppose you could say that there are simiralities between Eldar/Imperium Knights and the BFRs.
