What's New In Planetside?

<div class="IPBDescription">do I want to come back to it?</div> I played the planetside free trial a few months ago and likeded it very much. now that it's nice and cheap I'm thinking of subscribing for real. I just have a couple questions about what's changed recently...
I remember a couple weeks ago there was a big hubbub about the continents being moved to different planets... which sounds pretty silly because they always operated like different planets anyway, they just looked like continents in the map... so what exactly is the big difference now? if you go off one edge of the map you come back on the other?
there was also talk about mechs - are they in the game? how exactly do they differ from MAX armor? just bigger or what?

Overall, not a TON has changed, but there are a couple new places to fight and some minor changes. Chances are, if you liked it a month ago, you'll probably have fun with it again, and hey, it's only ten bones, so why not?
The only difference is that the global map looks like planets now.
Oshur is now these 4 tiny battle islands for super intense fighting. For example, one battle island has a dropship center and a couple towers, and that's it.
BFR's (the mechs) aren't in the game.
Im starting to play again, but soe needs to learn how to code. It looks/feels like quake2 with high res textures, except you get 20 fps with a radeon 9800 :x

RAM really helps with PS, from what I hear the main problem is that the engine renders things you cant see yet, although i think this has been changed.
I remember a scale thing saying they were about the size of a galaxy (a big air transport for those who don't know) standing on it's tail, which isn't that big.
Just FYI, to get a BFR, you need core combat. And you need to capture ten bases in a cavern, or something, to be able to get one. Each time you want one. So they'll be rare (ish). Although once they're out, anyone with core combat will be in the caves, leaving me to roam about on the surface conts, capturing everything and securing the victory of the NC! Muahahahahaha!
Uhh 9800 Pro 128MB not overclocked at all and I'm getting almost constant 75fps. Maybe get new drivers? I'm using the 4.8 omega's.
The game will never run totally smoothly on 512mb of RAM, upgrade to a full gig; you will notice the difference immediately.
Glory to the Terran Republic! Loyalty until death!

1024mb DDR is plenty
[quote] the MECHS need 2 people to pilot them. And they are huge.[quote]
mechs? 2 people? think you got the wrong game :x

Im talking while im in combat. 75fps is even stupid for how lowish-quality the game is
I can't find good settings for combat. I've got a AMD Athlon 3200+ which is currently set to run at 3.0GHz, 1GB of crucial pc3200, geForce 4 Ti4200 128mb. But even with the absolute lowest settings for everything (except visible distance, I don't sacrifice that) and DLOD set to target 120+ I sometimes drop to the low 30's in heavy combat. But get 190+ while indoors and 100+ in peaceful areas. On the flipside of the coin, with every option turned on (and I mean EVERY option) and DLOD turned off. I get 100+ indoors, hovering at 60 in peaceful areas, and the only difference in heavy combat is that it's now the high 20's.
Something about how they handle battles just slows everything down. I don't care to speculate on specifics, but it can't all be graphics at that point.

Eh, like i was saying, the only good thing in planetsides code is the netcode. Although fun, you must say soe is on the **** end of the stick when it comes to making a eyecandy game. And even then the frames per second sucks <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I wouldn't exactly say that. If you've ever tried to be an infiltrator assassin that preys on snipers and AV grunts. Then you would most likely know the follwing situation very well....
You pop the target in the back 1-2 times, he gets up and whips out a fully automatic weapon. Now here's the part that annoys me. You run backwards as fast as you can to gain some distance, meanwhile your target starts firing wildly. Eventually your target starts running backwards as well with his back facing you. So, to mid-paragraph recap, you're running backwards behind another guy that's running backwards. So his back is facing you and he's facing nothing in particular. At this point you start taking damage and die. He shot you dead while facing his back towards you. It pisses me off to no end because I can't effectively dodge if the information I have is flat-out wrong.

It was said by a DEV himself the porcess of obtaining the BFR key will only have to be enudred once.
Edit: Terran Republic FTW. That is all.
Also, did they ever add horns to the vehicles? I seemed to have a lot of accidents when I drove an ANT through a crowded base, desperately trying to get to the energy silo and avoid getting shot by guided missiles.
Oh, and are air vehicles still viable? I loved piloting and dogfights, so of course I played TR because the striker missile(which every TR infantry seemed to carry) was a pain in the **** to fly against.
And why do I have to wait eleven hours to unlearn my certifications? The nice training lady said I could experiment... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You gain XP from capturing bases, at least, you gain XP from the fight when capturing a base. The harder it is to cap a base, the more XP you get once it's finally capped (usually). I think it's something like, to get the full XP from a base cap, you have to be there 10 minutes before the base is hacked, and stay there until the hack has finished (which is 15 minutes), if there is still fighting going on (which there usually isn't at that stage).
And you can't keep changing your certificates because it'd allow far too much... lenience in the way you have to pick your certs. So you've just got a Reinforced Exosuit and Heavy Assault (which focuses on anti infantry). Then the Enemy tries a tank rush, you could just go back and recert ASAP to counter it. Then all the people who had just tried a tank rush would run back and get the Air Cav cert and come and bomb the living daylight out of you (with reaver rockets i realise that the liberator, the bomber, is Air Support <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), which would then cause you to run and re-cert to get the anti-air max...
It basically forces you to put a bit more thought into what certificates you pick. Do you go for an unstoppable infantry killing machine, but pathetically weak against any vehicle, or a combination that isn't as powerful against infantry, but lets you attack vehicles too. And so on.
To be fair, planetside DOES have to deal with a lot of textures given that there can be literally HUNDREDS of people in a given battle. Hence the dependancy on RAM; its the sheer volume of information the game is struggling to process.
And I think planetside looks very pretty actually, for an online game.

Well, there is a daily winner, but besides that, no, there is no way to "win" other than taking all of your opponant's bases, at which point they will be stuck in their sanctuary until they can break out.

Nope. No horns.

Well yes, air vehicles are perfectly viable.... in the right situations. In large battles the sheer volume of anti-air will rip you apart, aircraft are best hovering around the edge of the battlefield, picking off infantry and light vehicles.
Dogfights are very fun, but rarely happen due to aforementioned excess of anti-air. Air combat is the one aspecct of PS i've always wished they would improve.

You don't. Its a pain I know, and has been an issue for a long time, but if you want EXP you have to kill stuff, although EXP is shared within a squad.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And why do I have to wait eleven hours to unlearn my certifications? You can..... in the firing range.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->BTW: TR AV has dropped alot in pwnege, it now sucks *to me at least* beyond all reason. TR weapons have a steep learning curve; it will take you a while to get the hang of using them properly, but once you get it you will find the MCG and Cycler far better than the VS or NC weapons. Burst fire is your friend.
Xiller!!!

So then Ramboing to capture undefended towers doesn't get me any XP...

Btw, Chrono5788 of the Vanu Sovereignty on the East US server. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

it's always fun though :>
forward scouts are always useful!
One time we were in a desert place, sneaking up to a tower. And above us a Mosquito circled cuz it saw a turret fire. I held my breath in real life as it flew about 15 feet above me...circling...it had its guns aimed at me for about 5 seconds. I went to move after it flew away, then it came back and blasted me. My buddy tried to grab his stealth bike and GTFO but it got him too.
The moments before the carnage were the most nerve-wracking moments I've experienced in an online game for a loooong time.
