How Do You Change Texture On Edges?

Doors, buttons, etc need work.
When you apply a texture to a door or a switch say, the same texture is of course applied to it's edges. In the case of a door or button for example, this effect is undesirable. What is the easiest way to correct this?

You select said button, then, after applying the texture you desire to the edges, you re-select it, and go into the texture mode. then, you click on the ONE face you wish to give a buton texture, and apply said texture. WallaH!

I had to play with it for a spell because I can barely notice the tiny green lines that select the face, but I've got it.
The Texture application tool is this one:

Here's my problem: the yellow part I want to apply to the edge of the vent is on the wall_ygdamage1 texture, which has the wide yellow stripe across the top. If I select this texture to apply to the edge of the vent it doesn't apply the yellow part, it applies the grey part.
Anyhow, simply delete all those brushes you use for that vent and instead texture the sides of the walls. It looks better, and works just the same.

Yes I am aware of there being other buttons than the Fit one. I am uncertain how they all work but am attempting to learn (by reading and trial & error).
I could delete the 4 brushes and texture the sides of the walls, but what texture would the edges then have?

What? The texture you choose is up to you...
Anyhow, here are the buttons:
[Fit (fits texture on face(s))] [T(op, aligns the texture so the top of the texture is at the top of the face]
[L(eft, same thing)] [C(enter, same thing)] [R(ight, same thing)
[B(ottom, same thing]
[x] Treat as one (treats all selected faces as ONE face)
And then the ones on the bottom, which you shouldn't need to use other than Apply, Browse and Hide Mask really. Also, if you can't get the texture to look good with just the buttons, then just change the X/Y shift/scale or rotate it or something. Have fun texturing.

This reverts to my original question then, the edges.
Look at the image and you'll see the 4 edges of the rectangular vent facing you.
THESE 4 edges are the ones I cannot match to the adjacent yellow stripe from the wall brush.
Thanks for the help on the various buttons. I'm sure it's in teh Hammer Help somewhere, but I am tutorial'd out man ...
That worked just great. Sure enough it was aligned to Face. Many thanks!
There is another way of aligning textures on faces, which is the 'align to view' option (click on 'lift + select' button for a list of other functions to do when clicking on a texture). What this does is aligns the clicked face to the camera view. While not usually very useful, it can be very good for making a texture wrap across an uneven surface. If you want to have precise alignments with this tool, use the camera tool and change the camera view in the 2D windows so it is pointing exactly where you want it. The position of the camera will not change the alignment of the texture, just the X.Y positioning - but the angle of the camera will.
