GoToMyPC.com allows you to acess you're computer from any other computer. Its got a little trial of 60 minutes of connection or 30 days (whichever comes first). This would allow you to do neat stuff like acessing your box from school (assuming the sight isn't blocked).

Now, I wouldn't use this service enough to make the monthly fee worthwhile, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a similair (and, hopefully, free) service?

Assuming you're on Windows, grab the FileZilla FTP server and set up a passworded account. You can probably find other free FTP servers for other OS's on sourceforge if you're not on windows.

Next, grab a sub-domain from Dynamic DNS and download their IP updater program.

Now you can access your PC from anywhere, as long as you can get FTP software anyway which is a really easy thing to do (FileZilla also has an FTP client).

Not only can it do everything the other site offers, it's open source (type "VNC" into the search box to find a ton of possible clients with whatever features you want), so it's free, and it works on Windows and Linux. So you can use your home windows machine from your linuxmonster friend's house, or vice versa.

Do it the (hard?) way - Linux and ssh.

A remote desktop program comes packaged with windows xp and can be installed on windows 98, 2000, and the like.

Seriously, just use windows RDP if you're a windows person. There are articles on the MSKB to walk you through it, and it's helluva easy.

    VNC does pwn indeed.

And to say it works on Windows and Linux is an understatement. It works on Linux, Windows, Mac, Palms, Handsprings, about a dozen misc OS's, hell there's even a build out there for Windows Mobile cell phones.

Look on google for Remote Administrator.

Very easy & simple to use program, very cheap as well.

Though I dont use it anymore (I use terminal services, which is with the windows server operating systems), its a damn good alternative.

I thought only the client could be put on windows 98/2000 Pro?

VNC is a great program, but my friend told me it has some secutiry vurnabilities (bad encryption iirc).

I prefer TightVNC for my general flavor of VNC.

It has all the features you need in a nice package.

Yeah, i prefer TightVNC too. I mainly use it because i'm too lazy to walk across the house to do things on the other computers so i just use VNC and can control them from here.
