The second phase of the Half-Life 2 preload begins to Steam account holders today.

This will allow users to download the majority of the audio of Half-Life 2 in encrypted form. No purchase is required to pre-load Half-Life 2, but is required to activate the game. The moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be ready to start playing right away.

Wow, now you can spend even MORE hard drive space and bandwidth on a game you can't play!

Seriously, why the hell are people still excited about this?

The psychological effect of having a piece of the game that you long for so much?

I'm just happy that I won't have to spend ages waiting for the 4GB (I think?) game to install all at once.

Lets replace HL2 with DooM 3. Or STALKER. Or [Instert favorite game title here].

    See my point?

On top of that it shows that the people who're making the game are actually comming along with it, and kicking enough programing bug's a**es to make pre-loading available... It also shows that it's nearly done; nearly gold.

TBH, I would NEVER, EVER trust steam with my credit card number. Ever.

They can't even keep the freakin friends netowrk going, how are they supposed to keep track of credit card/purchas info. Think aabout it.

Why? You'll trust Amazon, Best Buy, Ebay, Barnes and Noble, et cetera, but not VALVe with your credit card number?

You can stop now. The "Steam Bashing" fad is over.

Considering that the guy who does Steam isn't Gabe Newell, I hardly think thats relevant.

Whats up with the halflife2.net forums? Anyone a regular there and know the password? I've been reading recently and I haven't seen anything about it.

Gaben was NOT his password, the idiot was just making a jab at Gabe.

Oh, and for the whole "Not intelligent company", let me remind you that you play their only released game daily, that they have enhanced a physics engine that the makers of which didn't even expect to go as far as they've taken it, and have created one of the most compelling reasons for thounsands of gamers to hold their breath in awe of just a simple TECHNOLOGY DEMO?!

Even if you don't want to give Valve your CC number, preload it. Then buy the game retail, and activate the already-installed game with your CD key. Saves you probably 10-15 mins, I'd guess. And probably a reboot.

But it completely eradicates the joy and anticipation of opening that jewel case and taking out hte cd.. loading the installer for the first time.. reading the manual while it installs... etc.

I just find doing it pointless unless you plan to pay through steam or have nothing better to do with your space/bandwidth/time.
