why is my system beeping?
well, I woke up this morning and powered up the conputer.
First alert I got (my GMail system tray program asking for my PW) Beeps at me, then a few more alerts (things I could do sometihng about, but I am to lazy to) come up and beep at me also.

This is a beep in the snse of my pc speakers beeping (not my soundcard and such).

The only odd predecesor to this was that when I uplugged my mouse last night (to switch it to my second computer) the keyboard also stoped responding, aside from that I have done nothing out of the ordinary.

I am about to do a malware scan, but if any one has any ideas, please help me out

AMD 1.1gig cpu

GeForce 4 Ti420

    PS/2 or USB mouse?
Unplugged while the system was running?

    oh, right

USB mouse, I unplug it from the system all the time (I know, don't unplug USB devices when windows is on, though I tihnk linux can handel that )

Again, the difference was that the ps/2 keyboard stoped responding (though the computer was rnning fine, as I was watching movies from it, to the second computer (has video out)

yup, every single alert friken beeps at me.....

I doubt this will solve it, but have you tried muting the speaker in the volume controls?

    EDIT: Typo.

    nope, and don't want to.

there are times when there should be PC speaker beeps, however, atm they are showing up on everysingle alert message.

As unlikely as it is, check whether unplugging your input devices activated the Windows accessibility features. One option among these features is to turn them off and go back to normal-input-devices only after a given time period of inactivity -- by default, I think the system beeps once to indicate that you can no longer use stuff like MouseKeys (using numpad for mouse cursor control) until you turn it on again.

Apparently these beeps are unique and mean something.
Does it beep once and then stop it does it beep 5 times
    and then stop or what?

    And because i'm such a nice guy I hunted down a chart/table
that contains the beep warnings and what they mean.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

maybe it's morse code sent by a gnome trapped in your computer, trying to escape?

    * is totally not helpful *

When my computer started beeping one day, it was because the power supply borked up and was putting crazy voltages through my computer. The actual computer itself was beeping though, not through the speakers.
