Old Problem Rises From The Grave!

<div class="IPBDescription">gah! my brain!!! ><</div> I think this was mentioned on the boards waaaaay back but couldn't find it.

Recently while at work I noticed an old puzzle that I remember but I can't work out.

Three girls went on a trip and along the way they stayed at a nice little hotel. When the bill came it was for the rather cheap price of £25 for all three of them. Each girl threw in a £10 to pay the bill.
When the bellboy returned with the change they took £1 each and left the remaining £2 as a tip.

Now... the total was £10 x 3 girls = £30
however, if we do the math with the story...

£10 spent - £1 taken from change = £9 per girl
3 girls x expenditure = £27
plus £2 tip left = £29!!!

Where'd the £1 go? I totally can't remember how this works!!! ><
Anyone shed some light on this and put my silly mind at ease?

IIRC, the trick is in the semantics to the end math...

that's supposed to be MINUS £2, which would leave it at £25, which IS how much they SPENT on the hotel, before the tip which we just subtracted...

    No, do it this way...

    10+10+10=30

    30-25=5

    5-1-1-1=2

    2-2=0

You have to have them pitch in first, then take away change.

I'll try to be a little more specific...
they're saying each girl spent £9, making the expenditure £27 total...
then they're saying PLUS £2 - that just isn't how it is...
they spent £27 total... £2 of that £27 was tip, so if you SUBTRACT the £2, you get £25, the cost of the room...

    so it's £2 tip + £25 room + £3 returned to them = £30 starting moolah...

    Oh right...

    so basically you mean the cost was actually £25 (room) + £2 (tip) = £27 = 3 x £9
    =D
waii! okies now I definitely get it! ~hugs disco~
oooh... wonder if I should send the answer in to the letters page it was in so I can look all smart and stuff? XD

Well, they give this sort of puzzle to kids. You may not look as smart as you'd hope.

    I didn't see you answering it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

People think in different ways though. What can be an easy puzzle for someone even at a young age can be tricky for someone of a different mindset though they would equally find something else easy that the first found taxing. That's the fun part about people; we might be the same species but we're still individuals ^^

I agree, people's individuality is what makes life great. I tried telling the police that, but they wouldn't listen.
