Not another CS Clone Mod
Hey, just wanted to let everyone know about this not-so-well-known mod. It has terrific gameplay and is a nice change from CS; DOD; NS.

It's called, "Pirates, Vikings and Knights". It has several excellent STEAM servers but no players. If you're looking for something new and fun, try PVK!

PVK Homepage: http://www.pvkmod.com/

Download: http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyond...in32/pvkb21.exe

I look forward to seeing some of you guys!!

Last I heard this died long long ago. They're unable to update it without rebuilding the entire mod, so I think they're waiting for HL2. IIRC.

This version works fine, however yes they are working on PVK II for HL2 and that should be truly awesome, but download it, give it a try it's really good.

even though it's a UT2k4 mod isn't air buccaneers (which was posted about ages ago) a better example of something different from the usual CS/World War games? =3

PVK felt like... well... a 3 team version of CS and stuff with a flavour of rocket crowbar to me lol.

Yeah it's great fun, I played it a while back. This and The Wastes were two of my faves, two bad both are, well... Less than popular.

This brings up the eternal question, "What makes a mod succeed?"

I mean clearly a dedicated fan base but how do you get that going? Their are lost of good mods that have no players, like VampireSlayer, which is still alive but dying a little each day. I still play it though!!!

How did NS do it? I mean TBH it seems like a mod that would fail, it's pretty hard on newbies. Or was until co_ came around. It has strategy which requires some work and teamplay, how did NS make it to having almost as many STEAM Servers as CS and just about as many players, with clans and vets and everything? Unfortuanetly I came in during 1.04 so I never saw the community really develop, but how did it get to be like this? Any old forum pappy wanna take a stab at enlightening me?

CS is big because it was so different... in a moddy world of sci-fi shooters it was the first sorta decent 'real' shooter with 'real' situations (note the funny marks around real... compared to the other mods that were out at the time it was definitely realistic by comparison ). The death-round system and hostages were like 'wow!' compared to the usual infinite respawn of the other deathmatchy offerings too.

NS had a lot of polish compared to most other mods and once again it was something very different; not just another silly CS/DM/TFC clone. It also tackled something that all the other HL mods severely lack; RTS-ness. It didn't go wholesale on it but it definitely touched on it not only in a new way but it's pretty well done too ^^

Stuff like PVK I can compare to a few things off the bat really. Weird and wonderful things like mastersword didn't take off because they're just so darn buggy for such a big idea (and their models suck which makes for more impact than I care to admit).
    VS... well it's got some new stuff but it's still very much CS/TFC like in it's playstyle. Just don't tell the team I whined about it because one of my old flatmates from back in university is the lead modeller ^^;

The mods might be fun but in most cases they just lack the level of polish or more often than not; aren't different enough from what's there already.

DoD even has it's nice little differences to help pull it from the crowd; it was pretty much the first serious WW2 mod, you die so much easier in it than most other mods and it has the whole 'map capture' thing which is kinda interesting, especially when combined with the large and relatively involved maps (first time I saw them I was blown away... they seem to have so much more to them than the usual HL mod maps I'm used to, much like the NS ones).

Bleh... despite all the possibilities I'm sure it's as much the luck of being out there at the right time as any of my suggestions =3
