Temperatue Sensors

<div class="IPBDescription">give a dog a bone?</div> Ok, so I'd like to find out what temperature my machine is running at, and I've got no clue how to go about doing it. I figure I'd search around for some sensors that magically connect to my mobo; It's not looking too promising. I think i'll have to get some sort of external thing but the problem is what? Can you get thermal LED displays attached to a cord and sensor? Not some big box that you have to install like a CD drive, just something like a voltmeter I can probe around with.

Could I just put a thermometer in my case and guess +\- 10 degrees? heh.

Most cheaper (<$30) digital multimeters have a temperature probe function. You can get them at nearly any hardware store.

most motherboards come with thermal sensors built in for cpu and ambient temps.

Does your machine run WindowsXP? I use a program called mobmeter to monitor my latop's temp, but I don't know if it would work on a desktop. Give it a shot:

Try MotherboardMonitor. It reports temperatures from any sensors and also fan speeds and SMART data if your hard drives support it (shows temperature/status of the hard drives).

You may find that your motherboard has temperature sensors built in. Mine has both CPU and ambient.
