Tsk tsk tsk, they should have known.
SE has been even saying themselves for years their still interested in remaking Chrono Trigger. Not to mention, Chrono Break has been rumored to be the true successor to Chrono Trigger, returning to its battle style with a twist, but returning most to its time-based-story roots.
It looks like it would have been great, this is sad indeed. I'm just saying that they should have expected it.

square enix didn't say anything during the original reconstruction of the game, where the graphics were essential copy-pastes from the original, tacked onto some polygons. i suppose square felt itself threatened by the quality of the CT:R and were afraid that this fan project would somehow eclipse their own releases. my arse.
however... i'm surprised no one brought this post up:

you've got to be kidding me. CT is one of the most kickass RPGs ever for the SNES. judging a game because it didn't have 32x32 sprites or random battles is pretty stupid. square enix did a great job of blending medieval and sci-fi elements together, attached one of the most original storylines to ever grace the SNES, and it had some really kick-arse graphics to boot. please, i'd love to hear your argument to the contrary.

square-enix does have a legal obligation to defend its trademarks, but funny how they never seemed to care until the project got this big.

they just did it because they'd get none of the attention and money it would have made
