Why Do People Sign Their Posts?

CabooseCaboose title = name(self, handle) Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13597Members, Constellation
<div class="IPBDescription">Somthing I've noticed.</div> Some people sign theit posts by putting their names at the end of it... I don't get it... Why do that?

I mean, their names are already there... Or at least they could put it in their sigs...

Can someone please explain this to me? I'm not saying this to be mean, but I honestly want to know.

I don't see why they're signed. But I noticed DY357LX presses enter for a new line, I think at the end of the post box. Look for his posts, you'll understand what I'm saying.

Why not - Bandwidth consumption. [when you have 10000 members to a forum all those bits and bytes really add up...]
Why - No sig. feature on some forums [like some of the massive public forums]

Its funny how people w/ sigs say this. What the hell do you think a sig is originaly intended for? You just signed your post!

meh, I kinda do that too if you ever look at my longer posts. Only I always skip lines when ever I end a couple sentences.

    Like this,.

So my posts always end up being longer and spread out but i just dont like lots of text squeezed all together in posts i guess.

I only sign my posts if I make some super detailed looong explaination usually.

    ie:

    Hope this helps

What do you think sig is from? Signature. People used to sign their posts with pictures and stuff.

So essentially, you just owned yourself.

I don't get the point either. Not only is your name next to your avatar, but you also have a signiture that would save you a lot of trouble if you put it there.

I believe it harkens back to the old BBS days where users weren't really registered, so it was done to give people a name to reply to. Why people do it now when they have access to a sig function in their account settings however is beyond me.
  • xKORExslimxKORExslim Join Date: 2003-01-11 Member: 12182Members
Get it, sig=signature. People who put their name at teh end of their post are double singnaturing... or something... lol

Anyways, nothing to get hoopie doopie over. Calm thee nipples.

signing your name gives you a point from which to put a post-script or edit, i guess...
  • DarknsDarkns Join Date: 2004-09-05 Member: 31402Members, Constellation
Sig hardly stands for signature anymore...
It's become more of a place to put a pic and add a quote.

It gives you somewhere to put a post-script.

Now why the tilde and not a flat out dash? I don't know if there's some sort of convention for that but the dash looks way more professionnal.

does it really matter? People like to do it, have always done it, or just do it by instinct. Let them do so.
