Odd Sound Problem

I have been playing ns from the start. I also play cs and dod. I now since b5 (installed fresh to the ns directory on a new xp install with a new steam install) have an odd problem with my sound in ns and only ns. Cs and dod are fine even jumping out of ns straight to a dod server the problem is only with ns.
It is dificult to describe, but if I were pressed to use a short description of the problem, I would say my bass has somehow been turned up to the max, then the lever has been broken off and turned up even further. Then they boost the bass.
Any of the environmental sounds, and for instance the starting sound and pings of death are so high in the base register that my headphones (very good pair) crackle. I have played the sounds in media player that are effected (they are all effected) and in media player they are fine and normal.
Things I have done:
Transfered my old configs to the new ns
Used the default config the install puts into the ns directory
Uninstall and reinstall
Installed it on another steam account (my hl2 cd key one)
Tried every combination of sound settings (high, low, 3d on and off)
all to no avail.

Like I said only ns seems to be effected not cs or dod or anything else that I can tell. It appears to be isolated with ns only.

Then I think I turned A3D and EAX hardware support on...
No more troubles, for me at least.
