Scanner Trouble

Fellow forumites, I have come to seek for help regarding scanners and their software.
First things first: I own AGFA Snapscan e20 scanner and I'm using Scanwise 2.0.0.9 for winxp drivers. I do have winxp pro too. I am using an administrator account. I have had it working before with winxp.

So the problem is this, whenever I have previewed and done the selection in Scanwise software and hit "Scan" I get the normal selection screen where the file is ought to be saved and given a filename. Okay so I hit <filename>.jpeg and hit "OK" and I get the usual "Starting scan" and then after 3 seconds: there it is

<b>An unexpected error has occurred. The application is unable to recover and will close.</b>

Okay, it's great subtlety but it still doesn't help me at all to scan the damn files! So people, I ask for your help here hence I have no idea what to do. Got a free software alternative? If so, please guide me to the presence of such gold. Thanks in advance!

uninstall the program, un-hook the scanner from your computer, and then return it and get another one. had the same problem, returned it, works.
