I was going to give some examples like Family Guy, Futurama, the Simpsons and Southpark.

...but after rereading your sentence I've discovered it makes absolutely no sense.

...So I don't know what I was thinking and how it was relevant.

I have liked the occasional anime cartoons 'Akira' was one that comes to mind. I still fail to see it's mass appeal tho tbh.

Each to their own tho really, although I have noticed that people who play online games etc tend to be more likely to be into anime cartoons. I have yet to meet someone in person who knows what Anime is let alone is mad about it.

    gem nails it.

yes there are stupid fanboys out there. We are not all like that, they are just the loudest.
V: Where are you from? Anime has not made it to many parts of the US yet.
I am from NYC, so I have been watching Anime being released in theaters for a long time now (from totoro, to monanoke, to jin roh, and metropolis).

Oh, and Gem: Random things on animes you listed:
    X (the movie) does indeed suck <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> aparently the eposodic version is very good <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hellsing is aparently much better as a manga (missing much less of the plot <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

I'm from the UK, Portsmouth to be exact.

We only have 4 Cinemas here and they all seem to be stuggling to make money so they only show mainstream films.

Slowly getting killed off by people like me who refuse to go pay to see crap like AvP.

The only anime the uk gets (theres maybe more) is DBZ, Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh and that kinda crap.

There's the occasional ones shown on Channel 4 late at night sometimes. That was where I saw Akira about 1am it was in japanese and had English subtitles. Even tho it was subtitled I enjoyed it.

I like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, and Trigun, but I can't really think of any others... I mean, I only like about 15% of anime, the rest is crap as far as I'm concerned. Basically, me belief is sci-fi/post-apocalyptic anime = teh win, and nothing else really gets me, no matter how good the story supposedly is.

Oh yea, and new American cartoons are some of the worst, terrible things ever. No wonder kids are messed up in the head and taking buckets of meds. The old X-Men and Spiderman were awesome.

Also, American shows seem to be a lot funnier, for example Family Guy and ATHF, but that's probably because it makes fun of our culture. There are also a great number of epic, amazing American movies, but they are outnumbered by filthy crap 99-1. I'm talking about things like Boondock Saints and Band of Brothers.

    Boondock saints is great XD

Akira's a weird one really... I'll probably get hanged for saying it but it's merely an 'ok' film. When it hit foreign shores the reason everyone went nutty over it was because it was 'new' and 'different' compared to usual western hub-bub. Pretty much the reaction to anything that's vastly out of the normal for a culture.

I much prefer the slightly simpler but heart-warming tales of ghibli but then again who doesn't?

Luckily some of the cinemas here in edinburgh show anime but it's a rare, rare event and usually only in the more artsy filmplaces like the cameo (where I saw spirited away and interstella 5555 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).

As for X and Helsing, yeah I hear the series/manga is better in their cases. Mind you isn't the manga always better in the same way the novel is better than the film? There's no real time limit to fleshing out the characters and story in a written/drawn bookwork compared to animation so it's much, much easier to make it fufilling and pad out the depth of things to make a truely great story ^^
To some degree the same goes for series; while never as deep as a good novel (graphic or otherwise) can go they're usually better than films in the char/story stakes. I guess they try to make up for it in the motion pics by upping the calibur of the movie (which they can't really afford to do in series) but hey... that's the limitations for you =3

If you want to shop for anime in scotland (dunno about silly england) then forbidden planet and either hmv or virgin (they seem to trade anime stock so one usually has most of the stuff while the other has virtually none).
I heard glasgow has some pretty neat shops for picking up anime/manga gear though ^^

    wait

is forbiden planet a chain, or does there just hapen to be a store with the same name and same genre of stuff hapen to exist in NYC and in Scotland?

    /me comtemplates

oh, and apraently the GitS Manga sucks compared to the movie <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

and as gem said, boondock saints ftw.

there are alot of good american films, it is just that we seem to be in a slump atm ;(

I like how people say Anime has no mass appeal yet GitS:2 was sold out in 4 theaters I went to yesterday. I guess by no mass appeal they mean they count themselves as thousands of people?
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
who said it had no mass apeal?

What people say is that there is not that large a folowing for it yet (GitS 2 is different as that was advertised like any normal movie)

So now the difference between Anime and a normal movie is marketing? I just don't understand why this question comes up so much its like one person doesn't like it and goes on a crusade to tell everyone that he doesn't understand why they like it.

It'd be the equivalnt of me going to the premier of Wimbeldon and asking everyone there why they like romantic-comedies.

PS I saw like 4 comercials for GitS:2 and like 600 hundred for Sky Captain so I wouldn't go as far as to say it was advertised like a "normal" movie.

    And well...movies I can't see that happening to the effect of Anime. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

Why are you comparing anime to movies. Shouldn't you be comparing anime to anything shown on a screen lol? Movies is way too specific, as some anime comes in TV series format and others are mini-series.

Oh man, didn't know you guys liked Boondock Saints. I loved that movie. And Band of Brothers of course, watched the entire series in a day with my friends, we were hooked.

In any case, I find that everyone is willing to attack anime for various understandable reasons, but no one is willing to attack american cartoons for other, just as understandable reasons. Is this a bias, conscious or unconscious? If it is, I find it deeply disturbing.

Not everything they show on Cartoon Network is bad, though the dubs, cuts, and censors ruin it. Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain are on there.

I wonder how they handled that one episode of CB with that veteran heroin addict...
